2007 A4 Avant 6 speed JHM big turbo, full suspension, *needs engine*

Recently picked up this beautiful wagon, and after owning it for 3 weeks, I hurt the motor. Not exactly sure what the extent of the damage is, but cylinder 4 is down on compression and the spark plug from that cylinder is damaged. Maybe broken valve or piston? Will need to be towed. Anyway, here's the set-up...

The b7 Audi avant is the last generation Audi wagon you can get with a manual transmission in USA. This is a 3 owner car that has been meticulously maintained and tastefully upgraded. California car it’s entire life - so no rust or corrosion at all. Paint is in excellent condition. A few very minor blemishes from being a 15 year old car but still in amazing condition inside & out. interior is in near mint condition, no sag in headliner, seats in perfect condition, no rips or cracks.
118k miles, clean title, deep sea blue exterior, beige interior, s-line wood trim (only 1 of 12 in this color combo confirmed by aoa). Full jhm td05h-r turbo kit installed by jhm (have 16k build receipt from jhm) S4 steering wheel, S4 peelers with conti dws06 tires, S4 brakes, JHM shift kit trio & jhm shift knob. Vogtland coilovers, 034 adj upper control arms, 034 rear sway bar, 034 adj end links, 034 strut mounts, 034 rear diff carrier mount, devils own w/m kit with funk button, p3 digital vent boost gauge, b7 rs4 clutch kit, custom fast intentions exhaust with s4 rear valence, jhm test pipe, jhm fmic, dash cam, Bluetooth adapter, tinted windows, entire build and all performance parts have less than 15k miles.
Cam follower has been updated with iABED cam follower conversion kit - so you’ll never have to worry about changing a cam follower again. fresh ac service, carbon cleaned, coolant flushed, oil changed, new spark plugs & coils, new cabin filter, new front brakes & rotors, fresh alignment, new fuel pump. Car ran great and was in perfect mechanical condition.

After talking to couple guys at JHM there seems to be a few different possibilities. It's difficult to narrow down without tearing into the motor and investigating. A lean condition from too small of a fuel pump could be one cause (previous owner swapped in a stock unit after a pump failure). The water/meth injection could've been adjusted wrong as well as the car misfired while the injection unit was activated, and was on when the engine blew. I put a bore scope into the damaged cylinder and could see a piece of the spark plug porcelain sitting on top of the piston. I was unable to see the valves or cylinder wall with the scope, but with the noise the engine made at the time it shut down, I'm assuming it needs a long block, or full rebuild. The spark plug electrode is bent, suggesting something physically hit it. compression on cylinders 1-3 are 150psi, and cylinder 4 is at 95.

Update here, motor has some weird damage. No visual bent rods or damage aside from bent cyl 4 spark plug, but the tone wheel is missing a big chunk. Spoke with a few people and no definite answer but one possibility is that the W/M was over spraying and caused the car to lean out.

I got a spare motor in the garage for the Avant, should have it all together for only ~2k. This one is gonna be totally factory just drop in rods from IE.

The turbo kit and goodies are now strapped onto my sedan with a built motor. She’s a ripper! The JHM tune and kit feels really good. Thanks to Dru for helpin out.

I’m happy with the price and although it is kinda worse case, this is what I planned for.

Hey Matt, yeah man thanks again. I’m back in town this week and gonna pull the motor and start the rebuild. Cyl 4 must have a bent rod that allowed the piston to come down lower and hit the tone wheel - I can’t think of any other possibility.

Not sure if anyone else has any interest but I’ll post more updates in this thread I guess…

We’ll I think I got lucky with the damage. Cyl 4 rod is indeed bent, slight damage to the block but I do think it’s reusable. I just dropped it off at machine shop and will get word next week if it’s good. Head is in perfect shape so as long as the block is okay I should have this Avant back on the road by September.

Last update if anyone cares to hear it.

Car is running and on the streets again. Threw some IE rods in the motor just incase I want to put the turbo kit back on, bone stock otherwise.

Im in around $9k for the Avant but got a bunch of parts for my sedan (~$5k). Works for me.
