B8 Allroad 2.0t BAD GAS MILEAGE

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Okay so i just bought my Allroad to have as a bigger second car to my 2015 S5. I figured id have more space and be a little more fuel efficient. I do a lot of long trips in the winter especially and Im doing a cross country drive in January.

Ive been driving the car for about a month now and have noticed Im going through fuel faster than I would in my S5. I drive 13 miles to and from work and it is 90% highway. Usually in cruise control at 70-75mph.

I fill the car up with Shell 93 and the dash will tell me I have 375 miles. I reset the trip to 0 to track exactly how many miles i’ve traveled since the fill up. Ive driven 75 miles and its telling me I have 230 miles left on the tank. That doesnt make sense. I should have closer to 300 miles.

Its almost as if I go thru a quarter tank of gas every day I drive 30 miles, when Id go thru barely half a tank in my S5 on a two hour, 125 mile drive to my shore house. And I rip it in the S5. The S5 is also Stage 1 with a full exhaust and an intake and 6 speed manual.

So a quick backstory on the Allroad. I bought it from the used dealer for 13k cash. It had 125,xxx on it. Scanned the vag and everything was in the clear. No rattles from the timing chain, no oil on the tranny from main seal and the car seemed solid on the test drive. Hence why I bought it. No drive select bc its a premium plus but thats the only thing i wasnt happy about. Whatever its an allroad and I have my s5 for all the dynamic driving i want.

I checked the oil level out of habit before I left the dealer and it said full. I had a two hour drive home. 30 mins into the drive I got a notification on the dash “Add a quart of oil, you may continue driving to a dealer.” I found this odd considering I checked the oil level in the MMI and it said full but me freaking out that my new car is leaking oil I went to the nearest autozone and put a quart in. No dipstick so I couldnt check that.

I left autozone and hit the highway and Immediately got a cloud of white smoke out the exhaust. Im thinking head gaskets, turbo, “im ****ed.” The car wasnt over heating and it only smoked when I got on it. So I kept driving and eventually the smoking stopped. I figured I overfilled it with oil and it was burning the excess off. I made it home to my mechanic and it was in fact over filled. Drained it and filled it properly with a new filter. I guess the oil level sensor is bad.

Could over filling have done anything that would effect the mpg?

Im probably leaving info out but I figured you guys would ask me the right questions to answer so we can try to find the issue.

Trip 1 avg mpg is 18.6 Trip 2 is 19.2

gas mage is the least of your worries is what he is telling you .. you bought an oil burner which will cost you thousands to fix .. we literally see it here every week . someone dumps an oil burner , a used car dealer pics it up ( usually at auction)and it waits for its next unaware customer.

Issues all seem to start at about 100K miles.. it needs new pistons and engine has to come out. If you insist on keeping it track your oil level very carefully.. as far as gas mileage goes who knows.. you would probably need to look at fuel trims, rolling resistance, and a host of other things, there are no quick answers. gas is cheap so i never look ... i figure we could live in Europe and pay world prices and in Canada i pay a lot more than you do ..

Mine has 127k miles and no issues. Issues should have started at 27k miles ago. Who do I contact to get my issues?

Sad but the first 2 guys to comment on your post are imbeciles that you shouldn't listen to.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and get a dipstick. Bad MPG's can be literally anything. I wonder how your valves look.

yeah this guy has no credibility so be careful. he's just a hater that is often put in the corner here by everyone

do your own research on b8 oil burning. then decide who is the Imbacile and who gave you a solid warning .

    il.just leave it at that.

lots of threads on here of heartache of guys buying burners. be aware.

OP- did you get a Carfax report to see if the car was fixed for oil consumption under the recall/extended warranty? The previous owner should have done it. U may also want to do a carbon cleaning and new injectors and plugs/coils pack to see if that helps improve MPG. Kinda late now, but seems like you overpaid (IMO) for such a high milage 2.0T that may require a few $$$ to get sorted. Good luck tho!

most used car sales are AS IS. Unless there was any kind of warranty, it's OP's problem. OP, drive it a good 100 miles after a fill up, re-fill, then recheck. Winter gas is garabge and I see a few MPG drop when it's cold, especially in traffic. Best I've seen cruising in my A4(Quattro) is an honest/verified 33 MPG but that was cruising @ 65. If I cruise @ 90+(in minecraft) it's more like 25.

You got burned by the MMI on the oil level. Might be a better idea to measure fuel usage using actual measurements before going too deep into things. Fill it, drive 100 or 200 miles, fill again, see how much went in.

The OP should grab a T40178 clone off Amazon or such and validate the calibration of the oil level display. CPM engine, upper ring gets set to 32. Oil at 0 marker should display at MIN, oil at 27 marker should display at MAX. If it's a little off, no big deal. If it's a lot off, I assume there's a way to adjust it, but never seen how to do so.

The OP should have VCDS, or at least OBDeleven, and run a full scan of the vehicle. Find out if there's already problems the car is quoting. And check the common 2.0T issue parameter, camshaft adaptation intake bank 1 degrees.

What are your long term fuel trims, mix and idle? What is your fuel consumption value when idling? Etc. Ie, you got an engine unknown to you, time to get to know it inside out. But yeah, those MPGs suck.

As mentioned above there are various factors that go into play regarding your fuel mpg or oil consumption issues. The 2.0T Audi engine is notorious for burning oil to the point that Audi tries to convince people that it’s normal for the car to burn an excessive amount of oil lol.

My first suggestion would be to purchase or order a manual dipstick to check the oil level and actually confirm if you are in fact burning or losing oil. Whether you are burning or leaking either one sucks. Get a good code reader, VAGCOM being the best, or Obd11 or Carista work in most cases, do a scan or view live readings.

For this engine I’d say a quart down between oil changes is normal, give or take your intervals of 3500-5000km. Looking at your service records, find out if any of the “fixes” for oil consumption have been done, if you don’t have records for this, try and check your PCV part number with the latest revision (can’t remember it off hand) sometimes that can be an easy indicator if any attempts have been made to rectify or prevent issues.

As for your fuel economy there are a few things you can do to maintenance wise that might help:

Carbon cleaning is just great to have done especially for these direct injection engines but can be a little expensive. If you do go this route, this is the perfect time for new injectors and seals since you have it open.

I recently had horrible fuel economy, and really sluggish acceleration/throttle response, the fix for me was a new upstream o2 sensor. When the o2 sensor goes back or starts to go bad (may not give you a code) the sensor will stop reading live readings from the catalytic converter and will provide a default air fuel mixture. This can cause your engine to run very rich. Not sure if it will work for you but for some weird reason, if I started the car and let it warm up the cat before driving, the car would run poorly and sluggish, however if I started it and just started driving before the cold start cycle was done, the car felt peppy. Not sure if you’ll feel that lol!

The other suggestion I have is a new air filter, a lot of people myself included recommend a drop in dry air filter such as the AFE filter. Just an overall better upgrade for your oem filter if you aren’t running a CAI system.

Another option is cleaning the mass air flow sensor, that will also control the air fuel mixture for your car. There’s sensor cleaner spray you can get or if your feeling festive you can buy your self a new sensor lol.

Fuel filters are also an option if you want to go about swapping that out. Can suck to get to tho.

Also as mentioned above, if you have the older revision PCV I would recommend changing it to the new revision with new breather hoses. While your at it the new Revision D diverter valve is also good to do.

Hope some of this helps but again without more details or fault codes it can be super difficult to trouble shoot :) all the best!
