    RSNAV MMI Connector Doesn't Fit

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey everyone,

I bought a used RSNAV standalone carplay/AA kit from another member in the B8 S4 forum. I just tried installing it, and everything fit fine except for the original large square connector going into the MMI. I tried plugging it into the RSNAV splitter, and it would go most of the way in (about 1/8" remaining), but I could not for the life of me get the swinging clip to move and the connector would not move in any further. I actually managed to hold it in place like this and get connection and was able to confirm that the carplay screen worked and came up, so I'm thinking that the unit is compatible with my 2017 S5, just something is off with the connector and I have no idea what.

I can provide pics if anyone has advice, and I would appreciate any pointers to other places I can post this.

It is not flushed in for me either, but I was able to lock it with the swinging clip.

Good part is that you are having connection, while when I tried installation first time, I did not have connection eventhough I was able to swing lock.

So maybe detach it, and try to connect that particular part first, get it secured before any other connection?

Good luck - hope you enjoy it.

That's the plan! I'm going to try again and just focus on that connection. If I were able to get a consistent connection without latching, I would've just tied the connectors together, but it was only if I held it in a very specific way.

I tried again this morning, and still no luck. At this point, either the splitter that comes with the RSNAV is dimensionally incorrect or my car's MMI connector is slightly different dimensionally (maybe because it's a 2017 which was a short production run and it changed?). I also took the latch off of the connector to see if it helped but it did not. The funny part is I ended up using zipties to hold the connector together which worked until I tried putting everything back together and they started slipping off while I struggled to fit everything back in. I got the full Carplay function to work. I decided to give up after the zipties went. My assumption is I would have this issue with any RSNAV product, including the larger screens, so I'm glad I bought used and also didn't buy one of the pricier options. I will probably be selling the unit if anyone is interested and think it might fit in their car.

Check the pins and make sure they aren't bent. Supposedly they can bend very easily if you aren't careful

Hard to speculate without visual input. It should be fine, if it's not, you need to find the physical impediment. Maybe one of the pin blocks are not seated well. Maybe the secondary lock for one of the pin blocks is not seated well. You're just going to have to look and see.

Did you reach out to the manufacturer? If there's anything different about the connectors from year to year or between models, I'm sure Daniel would know.

I'll upload pics of the splitter connectors and the MMI connectors soon. I personally couldn't see any difference or issues within the connectors, but having some extra eyes would definitely help.

I reached out to one of the support email addresses on the RSNAV site that said they specifically help with standalone units, so I'm hoping to hear back soon but I've read it can take quite some time.

Just to be clear, the issue at hand is the plugging of the factory quad-block plug into the female end of the RSNAV cable, the red line. Not about the male end of the RSNAV cable (the red circle) into your factory J794 (MMI 3G+ control module; says "Audi multimedia" on the front).

The RSNAV male end is securing into your J794 just fine? Same as your factory quad-block plug also plugs into the J794 just fine? It's just the factory quad-block won't plug into the RSNAV female end?

Yep, that's correct. The factory quad plug is the only one that isn't seating all the way, but today I did confirm full functionality of the unit by holding the plugs together and setting up CarPlay. The male end of the RSNAV cable seats fine into the headunit. It's very strange, and at this point my next plan is to just use more force. Someone in the RSNAV facebook group said they had to use a lot of force to get theirs in, and actually used clamping pliers, which is what I'm going to try in the morning and also get some pics of the connectors.

So I feel kind of dumb for not trying that in the first place... but pliers worked. Required way more force than I assumed it would, especially based on what I saw in install videos. So for anyone who may run into this issue in the future, just use pliers to clamp the connector in. Everything works great now.

    I second this motion!

And it could have been bent when the previous owner took it off!

    Congratulations!

Everyone's issue is different. My issue that I had to deal with using more force is to remove the MMI removal tool! And I had to use plier as well - clamped and pulled!

For one week, I was driving my car around with one tool sticking out of the MMI unit!
