Have you ever replaced your driveshaft ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Today my mechanic buddy removed my driveshaft as part of my downpipe install and noted excess play in the center support bearing. He doesn't think it can be replaced

I'll post a vid and some pics later but I do see products out there that replace the support bearing but, he seems to think the driveshaft would have to be sent off somewhere for it to be replaced. Any thoughts?

looks like a good product but it doesn't appear you can replace it on the rs3 driveshaft without total disassembly. In the video you can see the play in the bearing.

You have to sawzall the OEM carrier off, they have a video of the process on their site.

I had one on my RS3, install isn't too complicated. Take your time and make sure you don't pull the driveshaft apart in the center, otherwise you're looking at $$$ for a replacement.

Awesome thanks, i think we're gonna give that a shot. Right, from everything I've seen you can let the driveshaft hang or come apart!

Not a problem. Make sure it's supported on both halves and not sagging/hanging at any time. The center section is very fragile and if it's pulled apart from each other too far will pop the ball bearings out and it's basically unfixable. Let us know how it turns out!

Update: getting her all back together and got the IROZ upgraded prop shaft bolts. Am I right to assume the torque specs on those should be same a factory? not seeing jack on their website about it

I doubt it since the factory bolts are torque to yield bolts- aka stretch.

Here's the install procedure and at the 10:57 mark they mention 55ftlb

I saw that. Odd they mention the torque only on the larger bolts and not the shorter but maybe it’s the same

Any extra NVH you can notice in the cabin or vibrations at certain speeds? Just purchased one for my 2020 RS3 and having it installed next week.

It's going to be hard to say cause I'm also doing blackforest street engine and trans mounts, along with the Uni dog bone mount. So its fair to say I'll have some NVH hahah

I have uni dogbone and curious how much NVH street engine and transmission mounts add. I know you'll install all at once but please let us know what the NVH is like. For the uni dogbone, make sure the bolt in the puck is low torque (~10 ft lbs per instructions) or else your NVH will be higher than you want.

034 dogbone and pucks only gave some slight NVH at idle or in reverse. On a 1-10 scale, the 034 motorsport engine and trans mounts are a 7 when cold, 5 when idle, nothing added when moving. The dogbone is a 3 when cold, 1-2 at idle and no additional when moving. What ever is added by the DB is worth it if you're going with more power. Engine/trans mounts are the money shot, benefit of improved response is worth it, side effect is vibration felt in the seat at idle (call it a nice purr), nothing else rattles/moves.

Well said. I don't mind the NVH. I daily a Golf TDI so when i take the RS3 out i want the racecar feel and the vibrations are mostly at idle. The BFI mounts are super high quality from what i can tell. I don't hear anything from the driveshaft. I wish i did the mounts before the dogbone so I could see the difference.

My car is much louder for sure. The Uni downpipe and midpipes sound amazing mated up with my miltek cat back. I get the wastegate chatter but really only on cold starts.
