My New B5 Avant and Some Improvements

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    My first B5!

I bought this 1999 1.8T 5sp Avant in Washington a few months ago from the second owner.
Only 82K Miles! The original owner had it from 1999 until 2021 and serviced it at the same dealer that it was bought from until he sold it. Upon buying it and giving it a once over I drove it from Washington through Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, down through Ohio, and back up to Rochester. Car did amazing aside from a small coolant leak. Definitely finished the trip wishing for a sixth gear though.

First improvement was swapping out the american flat glass for some european convex mirror glass which almost completely eliminate the blind spot, would highly reccomend for only $60.

Then for some maintenance, did an oil change, valve cover gasket, and spark plugs.

Ordered a wing from poland, (took i think 4 weeks to arrive) but it seemed to fit just fine

The off-color coolant resevoir was bugging me and I needed to swap out the incorrect green coolant for the right purple stuff, so I thoroughly flushed the system and changed to a new coolant resevoir.

Decided to replace the fuel filter as well, this was a pain in the ass job that took longer than I wanted, but I'm glad I did it as it was original to the car.

Replaced the rattling stock speakers with some infinitys, definitely helped the sound quality but it was immediately obvious that the stock amplifier is absolute crap. I will probably make a post dedicated to this project when I finally get an aftermarket amplifier and figure out the best way to set it up.

Found a facelift grille at the junkyard for $10, nice improvement.

Realized some of my 3rd brake light bulbs were out, tried replacing them using what rockauto said would fit but they were no good, I ended up paying $3 a bulb from fcpeuro for oem bulbs and they work great. The part number for the corre

Got some RS6 style wheels from a friendly Audi/VW Guy in Syracuse (I have never seen so many 3.0ts in one place), they'll need refinishing and summer tires, so putting them on will have to wait until next spring.

Car had a weird pulsing feeling when slowing down from 10mph to a stop, figured it was the rear brakes as they looked very crusty and original compared to the fronts that seemed like they had been replaced at some point. Replaced the rear brakes but the problem still persisted so I replaced the fronts as well. Replaced front brake lines as they were cracked, should do the rear brake lines at some point as well.

I went with Akebono European Premium Ceramic pads on the recommendation of a friend but I honestly cannot reccomend them, as much as its nice that they don't make any noise and create very little dust the pedal feel is shit and unless they're warmed up the bite is pretty crap as well. Will probably go with semi-metallic when I eventually upgrade to either 17z or 4-pot Porsche calipers

Did another oil change, this time with my favorite liqui moly additives and oil for the winter.

Friend had a small accident in the driveway and spidered the paint on the rear bumper, got it repainted and threw in the front license plate filler and wing at the same time. Wing fits great and is exactly what I think the rear end of the car needs to not look quite to egg like.

There were a few other small projects that I didn't have any pictures of but that's just about everything I have done so far. Coming up is probably going to be bilstein shocks/H&R lowering springs to improve the looks and handling, and a 42 draft designs exhaust and a K04 to make a little more power and noise.

Wow, great job. Looks like you take care of the car well. May it serve you well.

Link to the RS4 spoiler btw? Was planning to buy one and I might know the exact one you bought but lets see :)

Pretty lucky you scored an S4 bumper with it, the prices are crazy on them. Also next time I highly suggest to get Mann 950/4 Oil filter, its the biggest OEM(spec) size filter you can get, and this engine needs it.

Nice buy! Couple things to note on this car.

That grille you snagged is actually still a prefacelift grille, the facelift one has one less cross bar and the chrome goes around the cross bars.
That rear bumper is a european bumper so pretty rare in the states, I'd recommend finding some S4 side skirts and door trim to complete the look, along with some facelift headlights down the road.
I would also recommend finding some quality coilovers instead of the shock/spring combo, just my personal preference but it just seems like a waste to spend all that money and not have any adjustablility.

    Congrats on the avant!

Thanks! I know one of these in this condition is getting pretty rare and I hope to make it even better.

Good to know about the bigger capacity oil filter, I'll make sure to include that when I change the oil next. I would have assumed that the Mann one I already have would be plenty since its just as big as the one on my friends massive duramax truck haha.

This is the one I bought: https://www.ebay.com/itm/274868122042
Only complaint is that it shipped with no tracking and arrived when I was out of town. I assumed that it had been lost and was about to call up ebay customer support and ask for a refund but I decided I should check at my local post office first, and of course they had it in the back and were only a few days away from shipping it back to Poland. Fitment is better than any aftermarket spoiler I've ever dealt with, with some 3M VHB and plenty of adhesion promoter its on so firm I can shake the whole car with it.

The bumpers are an interesting story, I was told that the car was in some sort of minor accident that called for the replacement of the front bumper and the original owner opted to replace the bumper with an S4 one, but it seems he went with a replica as the fitment isn't 100%. The rear one was obviously replaced at some point too so I assumed that it would be a replica as well, but when I removed it to drop off at the bodyshop I took a picture of the info on the inside and it seems to be genuine. Here is the picture: https://photos.app.goo.gl/CUBP8BuQryCJzwHU7
Im not yet an expert on B5 bumpers (or anything B5 for that matter) so any info is appreciated!

Wow, it must be a nice surprise to have a euro-spec rear bumper.

These are the type of forum posts I remember too, spent alot of time on BMW e28 forums and the community was fun. They would plan gatherings to do certain projects on multiple cars, bbq, homebrew, etc. Good Times... Guess its all social media now

-What glass did you buy? I want to do this for my B5. I have had it for 11 years and am doing some sprucing up.

Though I only see they have the left one. Not sure why they're not sold in pairs.
