Rebuild this turbo or let it ride as is ..?

    Hi again -

I bought this semi-project (B8 A4, 2.0L) with a mostly reassembled motor, after the timing chain jumped and bent valves at 120,000 miles. The turbo is out and mostly apart too. It looks normal to me, I don't see evidence of leaks, it "spins" fine as far as I can tell.

Rebuild kits for it are quite cheap for the stock k03 , and it looks pretty straightforward. SO, should I rebuild it while its already out out, or just reinstall it the way it is to save time and avoid possibly making problems for myself? The waste gate and its mechanism look just fine, BTW. I AM thinking of getting a new vacuum actuator for the wastegate, because they are pretty inexpensive and also come with a completely adjustable shaft, and I wouldn't mind having the ability to tweak that if necessary.

It sounds like with a rebuild, its really important to mark the two wheels very accurately so you can put them back in the exact same "orientation" to each other for balance reasons, right? Also, when resealing the case back together, do i need to specifically use the "anaerobic" sealant, or can I use just a high-temp sealant, for obvious reasons?

I've searched the threads for a while, but haven't found satisfying answers on this. Thoughts.....?

No one really rebuilds the stock IHI JH5 turbo since K04's are cheap nowadays. The issue with them are the wastegate flapper, so just change that while it's out and you should be fine.

Understood! Thanks - I'll take a peek at the K04 option or just sit tight with what I have. BTW, the wastegate looks and operates just fine. Thanks.

As Nano909 mentioned, the main failure point of the stock turbo is the wastegate flapper, specifically play in the bushing that goes through the turbo housing and play to the connection of the wastegate arm and wastegate actuator rod.

The markings I believe are referencing the CHRA position And “clocking” within the housing. This has nothing to do with balance but position and angle.
