    Question 2009 audi a4 quattro

I have replaced the water pump due to overheating. When I went to rotate the crank to seat the belt the gears under the pump did not turn. I proceeded to get the belt on prying and pushing it on with a screwdriver. Closed everything up and refilled the coolant and started the car but it eventually pegged the temp. gauge. I assume the gears driving the water pump from the engine are not turning. How can I fix these gears or get them to turn. This car is also an oil burner with one cylinder using a spark plug extension to keep it away from the oil and fouling out. I'm a 72 year old working in my driveway trying to save my daughter some big bucks. Thanks for any insights to get this pump cooling the engine.

Assuming this is a sedan or wagon, with the CAEB engine, and not the B7 cabriolet with the BWT engine.

The water pump belt is driven by a pulley on the rear end of the driver's side balance shaft. You'd need to see if the pulley is turning when you turn the engine. It sounds like you're saying you've checked this and turning the crank did not turn the pulley.

The balance shaft 27, you see the oil seal 23 at the rear end where the shaft protrudes out of the engine, the pulley 30, and bolt 67.

    the pulley - https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...ley/06h103731g
the left hand threaded bolt - https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...-vw-wht001163b

The pulley is not keyed to the shaft; it's just a friction grip mating based on torquing the bolt to spec.

But the bad case would be if the balance shaft seized and the balance chain simply jumped off, as someone recently posted. Does the engine feel smooth while it is running?

Thank you for the info you sent it is very helpful. I double checked and the balance shaft is not turning the bolt or the gear. I don't think it is loose I tried to wrench on it and it does not turn. I think it is seized as you mentioned. The balance chain you mentioned I can't find in the diagrams you attached. If the shaft is seized do you have to tear the engine down to get to it? or is there another to fix it. Sounds to me like the engine is trash, dead to me! Any advice at this point.
Would an engine replacement be a way to go? How do I replace an 09 engine with another engine and not have junk again?

Well, could just replace the balance shafts if that is the case. Any CAE or CPM is the same gamble, unless you know the issues have been fixed. The balance shafts issue is certainly not as commonplace as issues like the piston rings.

There's a lot out here in the forum on the balance shafts and timing and such. Just not looking to rewrite it all yet again.

Did you turn the crank the proper direction? (video below, about 13:45)

If you do decide on an engine replacement, the B8.5 motors are supposed to have fewer problems. I installed a 2015 motor in our 2010 and it's been fairly solid for ~50k mi now. The intake manifold & crank position sensor are the only things that need to carry over from the old engine.
