2009 audi a4 quattro

i have had a lot of problems with this car, it has aprox 140,000 miles on it. Replaced the start and now I have just finished replacing the water pump in my Indiana weather driveway. The gears to the water pump do not turn when i turned the crank. what would cause this and how can it be repaired. I'm a 72 year old father trying to save my daughter a thousand bucks.

Would love to help Jerry, but first thing to know is that you've posted in the B8 S4 section of the forums (covering the S4 model from 2010 thru 2016), rather than the B8 A4 section (covering the A4 model from 2009 through 2016).
