    Trickle Charger

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!

I just ordered my 034Motorsports tune and I know that during the time I need to be hooked up to a charger. Any suggestions for a good economical option? Something I can pickup at AutoZone or advanced. Thanks!

Check this out, they talked about it during one of their live streams. Important to get an actual charger, not just a trickle charger I believe.

    I have a CTEK MXS 5.0 smart charger/maintainer. https://smartercharger.com/collectio...s/ctek-mxs-5-0

I hard wired the pigtails to the charging posts under the hood so all I need to do is connect it and plug it in when needed.

I've flashed mine at least 6 times now. I've never been connected to a charger. Definitely don't turn off the engine and blast music with your headlights on for an hour before flashing though.

Buy a charger though, if you own a car you should own one.

you can also wear a condom and life jacket when you flash.

simple solution. turn on the car acc power and roll down driver window and then turn off ac, radio, and lights, etc. close the door and pull laptop thru window and flash on your hood with a towel under laptop. have good wifi sometimes the dongle gets updates so takes longer than other times. i have atleast 20 flashes this method between EPL and now 034 zero issues

According to 034, it needs to be able to provide 20A in supply mode. This requirement certainly minimizes your options to higher-end professional grade battery chargers.

    NOCO GENIUSPRO25 -$350
    CTEK CS FREE -$300

These are the cheapest I could find on Amazon.

The other devices listed in this thread can only provide max 5A. Hell, many users here as well as some 034 videos don’t even connect to a battery charger when flashing.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just flashed back to the e85 file today with my headlights on and the ac and stereo running just to prove a point.

You'll be fine if your battery is healthy to flash without one. But it's a good safety mechanism.

CTEK is worth the price if you have multiple vehicles or like to store vehicles

when your ignition is on, chances are youre pulling more than 5, or even 20 amps. What matters is that your battery is charged. If you have a bad battery, dont do a flash. a trickle charger or even 20 amp charge wont help a bad battery.

Your battery is able to supply over 600 amps. and an H7/H8 battery is typically 80aH, meaning you can supply that “20 amps” mentioned for 4 hours straight, when fully charged. A flash takes 10 minutes at most to do the ecu and tcu.

Any tuner will tell you that switching between maps is significantly faster than flashing from/to a stock file.

I know with previous cars, the trick to doing the long-write initial flash without a battery charger was just to pull the Fuel Pump fuse. Priming the LPFP was responsible for most of the current draw prior to engine start. This along with the usual lights, stereo, AC off, etc. was enough to keep the battery from dying. Has anyone tried this with good results? Looks like the LPFP fuse is A16 in the footwell.

I’ve got a charger on the way, but may give this a shot for science if nobody else has done it..

The cost of having to replace the ECU if the car dies mid-flash is likely enough to keep most people from trying this.

Update: Removing the LPFP fuse works.

For those without a battery charger you can remove the A16 fuse from your footwell fuse box. As always, be sure that your battery has a good charge and hasn’t been sitting for too long.

You will need a T30 torx bit and various pick tools and/or a small flathead.

Locate the A fuse box (top left)

Remove the pink plastic fuse cover by gently pulling outward. Then locate and remove the 30-amp A16 fuse:

Follow the initial flash instructions (I did both trans and engine one after the other).

Once the flash is complete, replace the fuse, fuse cover, footwell cover, and cap. Start the car and enjoy..

Disclaimer: As with any modification there is a risk that something could go wrong. If your battery is too low to begin with, damage may occur. The use of a battery charger will reduce this risk.

I just went with this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's saved me a few times aside from providing maintenance to the battery for the 1 time I flashed 034 stg 1 ecu + tcu.
Jumped a friend's car that was dead in my driveway and my neighbors car.

Affordable peace of mind, I'd say.

It only provides 2A in supply mode. Far short of the requirement to maintain the battery if it were to die while flashing the ECU. So although a nice piece of mind, it’s quite irrelevant if things were to go south.
