Driving without keyfob present - S8

Should it be possible to drive the car away without the keyfob present for the whole journey?
Had someone collect my car to redo the wrap on my bonnet and the car was running when he took it away. Got a phonecall about 15 mins later asking where I'd left the keyfob, to which I replied in my pocket. He managed to drive 4-5 miles to his unit.
Anyone else shed some light on what should happen?

Until the car gets turned off you can drive without the keyfob.
