8Y Front License Plate - Ideas?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Unfortunately I live in a state where front license plates are required. I'm thinking of doing a side-mounted plate. For 8Y owners in a similar situation, care to post a picture and describe what your solution was (tow hook mount, stow-n-show, etc.)?

    Thanks!

I'm going to run no plate until I get a fix it ticket here in NY. Here's a thread on another forum with solutions.

I live in NJ but I'm not running a front plate. Will wait until I'm told I need one. I do like the euro mount but want to avoid the sensor interference issues. Will see.

I think putting the plate off center looks worse than just putting it in the middle. Minnesota plate won't look too bad if your car is blue.

There has to be one that attaches to the tow hook and can be removed / put on as needed. I'd just get one of those, and run without a plate. If / when you get a ticket, simply take detailed pictures of you 'fixing the issue' and get the ticket dismissed. Rinse / repeat. I did that with velcro strips on my Mitsubishi Evolution and I just don't plate anymore up front. Texas doesn't seem to care - but if I take a road trip I just gin up a temporary velcro solution for that need and take back off.

Front plates are idiotic. I challenge any cop to read a plate off any car coming at them in head on traffic. Just a nonsense thing to enforce with no logic behind it. Also if you're planning a crime, not like you're going to leave the plates on, or you would just swap them with some other car for that purpose.

    All stupid.

    Temporary FTW.

Is there even an OEM front plate bracket for the 8Y?

Has anybody tried one of these? Seems like a reasonable solution for either a permanent / no-damage option, or a temporary/removable mount.

I'd have to confirm but I think this will cover up the big square sensor in the lower grill.

Around here it's an $85 fine and no points, just the cost of doing business. I've had three tickets for it in the twelve years I haven't run a front plate.

I believe so. The dealer asked me if I wanted it installed when I got my plates. I said no of course, so I don't know what it is.

I want to get a black plate, but I am not sure if they will install them if I don't have the front plate bracket. I could get a tow hook mounted bracket, and take it off, but that is quite a bit more money.

My sales guy didn't think a front plate bracket exists because it doesn't show up in the window sticker or have an accessory code apparently. Not 100% sure, but didn't want one anyway.

The only thing I've seen done are self-tapping screws straight into the bumper lol horror show.

I have yet to see one with a bracket. I'm guessing it's like the A3 and you screw directly into the bumper as you said. Terrible idea via Audi.

That’s how my SQ5 is, you self tap directly into the bumper. NO THANK YOU! Just run no plate, OP. In 20 years I’ve never been pulled over for it lol.

agreed, front license is senseless yet better to have it and be in compliance than argue with some idiot cop writing a ticket. may also be necessary when entering canada. the 2022/23 8y rs3 tow hook is left threaded. cravenspeed in portland OR makes a left threaded tow hook license plate kit for $100. however it sticks out and often sets off the finicky sensor and will inevitably get damaged on a snowbank. my solution was a set of powerful black colored rare earth magnets that came with 3m adhesive strips. i attached the magnets with the adhesive to the front grill center, careful to not obstruct the sensors. then another magnet on the outside of the license.

Has anyone ever drilled the tow hook cover and made a hole for these style license plate holders?I thought it might look more clean. I'm mocking up soon...

I used double-sided tape from walmart. 3 strips across the back of the plate, stuck it on in April for the inspection in MA, and it's still there
