Is there a way to get the files from a working drive to use to clone mine or am I stuck with getting one from the dealer?

Back in my bmw days it was common to clone the i-drive spinnings to ssd's for backups, speed an reliability, but this would need to be done prior to failure. We used clonezilla software for cloning, and had to source the now-obsolete PATA drives.

Do you know which interface, size and form factor the drives uses? If you also know the file structures (ntfs, etx4, fat32) etc you could resize to gain more space.

It's a normal 3.5 spin up drive. You can here the head clicking.

I think you can just replace the drive with an SSD but as Norskie mentioned you would need to clone a working one I believe. The A4 forums mentioned replacing the drive somewhere but I cant seem to find the thread. DrGER would be a good resource to message or Smac. They are some of the more technical people that I've seen.
