Used ballasts or modify to fit these new ballasts?

Hi S4/RS4 members. I'm looking to upgrade my A4 from halogen headlights to HID headlights and in my search the B5 OEM ballasts are no longer available new. These are the headlights I plan on buying.

Do I risk buying used ballasts and hope they will last for years? Or buy these new ballasts and modify them to work?

    No thanks. I prefer HID.

I like the light a little better from the xenon hids too. I do have cars with both though.

Having had 4 b5s with hids, I've always bought used ballasts when I have one starting to fail. They're cheap enough you can buy a couple sets and probably be good for a long time to come. That said, I've also never put much effort into looking for any aftermarket ballasts that would fit without too much trouble. I guess if you know what you're doing with new aftermarket then go for it. The call is totally up to you though.
