Question Closed vs Open Intake for engine health

Hey guys, first thread here, sorry if I miss any courtesies.

I came here to confirm or deny one of my coworkers cautionary tales. He recommends that I keep my air intake system closed as opposed to opening it up(to hear more SC Whine), as I'm using it as a daily driver in Canada. He was saying having it open can jeopardize the engine/intake health as I'll be driving in snow/gravel roads and I possibly will be letting more dust/leaves/snow into my intake bay by leaving it open.

I'm not sure on which intake I'll be getting but if you guys agree with his thoughts on keeping it closed, I'll likely go with the AWE S-Flo intake with stock cover to increase the whine a little bit with the different filter and inlet tube.

    Cheers,
    Talon

You're going to run a filter, so what difference could it possibly make? I would find some new friends.

He was the foreman on the work crew I was on before I was promoted. The only reason I wondered was because he has a many, many more years of experience on tons of topics, as well as life. I wasn't sure how much he knows about superchargers opposed to his regular diesel engine knowledge and turbo gas engines. I had another coworker say, that keeping it closed might help with the life of the filter and such.

As for your last comment, If he is out to lunch on his recommendation, I won't fault him, and will definitely be keeping him as one of my mentors in life.

    Cheers

That depends on if you plan on making the filter exposed to debris kicking up into the engine bay. The stock airbox has a set path which air and anything in it takes to get to the filter, designed to minimize water and debris in that air making it to the filter. It's sealed in regards to whatever crap might be in the engine bay.

Is it an issue? You won't know until it is. Check the filter from time to time from holes. Stuff definitely makes it into the engine bay, but I don't know if any of it has the weight or speed to make it an issue for a filter.

Just vent the stock box and keep the stock air filter. That way you get some more sound but keep the superior filter. The paper filter 100 percent filters better than any cotton filter. I dont know how much life it will take off a street cat but the fact that our intercoolers are most likey in oil vapor makes me want to keep stock filter and minimize any small dust particles sticking to them and gumming them up over time.

I have running the roc euro intake for 10 years now. I rotate to a clean filter every 2000 miles. Never any issues

If you usually drive with your hood closed then a open filter is preferred.
