Possible swaps into the 01E B6 platform??

    Hey guys!
I’ve got the slow 3.0 in my b6 a4, and while I’m not specifically disappointed with it (sounds good with headers and exhaust), I’m looking for input on what engines match or closely match up to the transmission.

I’ve looked into supercharging (centrifugal) it and there’s a ton of things the 3L shares with the 2.7tt and even later v6’s. however because of things like the block being aluminum and close cylinder spacing, as well as 2 bolt main caps, it just isn’t up to the challenge I’d be giving it.

I know this thread has been touched on before.

2.7t is a popular swap. Since you're starting with a 3.0 you already have a lot of the parts

True, that’s probably the easiest if you don’t like the 1.8t. Plenty of power, plenty of aftermarket support, plenty of debt lol. What if though, hear me out—Volvo t5 engine in there, but rad would have to move.

Or a 07K That's becoming a popular swap and those engines especially early ones can be had for cheap and have forged cranks and should handle 400whp on stock internals. The issue is it needs a lot of custom fabrication to make it all work together. Every engine will bolt up to that transmission or any and all transmissions in the audi/vw family. I'm in the process of a 07K swap, still waiting on some odds and ends but I will have an update shortly and hopefully over the winter I will get more done.

Plenty of VRT swaps have been done as well as 2.7t swaps. My recommendation if going with a 2.7t swap is convert that thing to a top mount single turbo setup and avoid headaches and downtime.

Also 3.0 block is cast iron in your vehicle.

07k would be perfect actually. Definitely looking into that. I have the 3L in the garage stripped to the block, magnets don’t stick and it’s very clearly aluminum. I WISH it was cast iron but unfortunately not. There’s a self study on it too. Very light block.

What if I wanted like 450ftlbs of diesel power?

My bad thinking of the cast iron liners that are used in this block. Personally it comes down the $$$ and ease of swap and fabrication. Diesel power wise I guess one could swap in a 1.9 pumpeduse turbo engine from a vw passat. It all comes down what your goals are.

    And swap process for the 2.7T is very well documented;

As I understand it, transmission belhousing pattern is same for all of audi's 1.8T, V6 and V8 engines from the B6 era so any of those blocks can bolt to the existing transmission. 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder used different engine cross member that needs to be swapped if going +/- 2 cylinders.

For turbo builds on the 07k, are there any weak points in the engine? I see it’s cast iron but only 2 bolt mains. Do you need a girdle to reach figures of 6-700hp? Maybe the stroke is short enough that it’s fine for this one.

Also yes a single turbo 2.7t swap would be the best option for time and ease. But they still are pretty expensive to swap in and do a build on for 500whp ish. I think it’s too common for me though.

So far on the iron block the limits hasnt been reached. There's at least one drag car making north of 800whp with a iron block in NJ. Weak links in that engine are rods and pistons after that harmonics, at higher engine speeds depending on the setup the #5 crank journal and webbing likes to separate itself from the rest of the crank. Many people beef up the hardware. ARP 625+ studs for mains, head and rods and then try to find the limit.

Building mine for more!! I have ID2600X injectors for it and some other goodies. Waiting to get the engine back from machine shop.

it really comes down to budget and how handy you are. I did a 2.7t swap for about 2500 net including all new timing/hoses/seals/gaskets. The labor was free as I did everything myself and sold off pieces of parts cars and the original engine to make back some of the $$ spent.

sure everyone has done it but its an easy way to get 275-300ish whp on a stock turbo 2.7t

If I had an unlimited budget and better fab/welding skills I'd do a turbo 07k or VR6T
