Started getting P0597 codes for the map controlled thermostat open circuit, and it would come back after clearing and set the MIL.

$1400 to replace. Part is $360. (If I had the inclination or the time the part is only $200 online.)
New superseded part from the original is 079-121-115-BL

I miss my '68 Firebird...about 10 bucks and fifteen minutes to replace the thermostat. Ha.

I was quoted that to replace mine too, ended up doing it myself. bought a brand new updated oem one for $280. it was the latest revision i believed it ended in "BL" and comes with the gasket and housing
theres some useful info here if you want to tackle it. or have a mechanic do it. The quote is high because the official procedure involves pulling the whole front end and what not. But that is not necessary to reach the thermostat for replacement

Yeah, I appreciate it and kudo for DIY.
I just wasn't that ambitious and especially after just tackling the driver's side spark plugs nightmare.
Hopefully they did the vacuum fill too because I don't have that tool either.

Oh sorry I misunderstood, didn’t know you had them do it already. All good either way, it’s water under the bridge. But yeah I didn’t vaccuum fill mine, I just bled the system after filling and it worked fine. I’ve done it like that on a C7 several times. Just for future reference if you ever do need to fill the coolant system and don’t have a vacuum filler

Yep I had them do it since I can also get the rental from them for a few days while it is down and they fixed a loose secondary air hose.

I had always though since the turbo coolant lines are close or maybe above the coolant reservoir it was a challenge to get the air out of the top of the system and is why they do the vacuum fill but it is good to know it is unnecessary for future reference.

Yeah I think the vaccuum fill is more important if you have stock hx with no bleed port. The engine cooling system is pretty standard to bleed, but I also have the ability to manually bleed my Merc HX through the bleed port and the hx supposedly self bleeding too so that might be a better choice to vaccuum fill if you're on stock HX.

Its sad to say but you also don't know if the dealership vaccuum bled your system unless you check your heater and watch your IAT's and coolant temps. We'll hope they did vacuum fill it properly though since they're supposed to lol

If it's the thermostat on the side of the water pump assembly no need for service position. If it is the map controlled thermostat at the front of the engine, ain't way you're getting that out without putting it in service position.
