    Questions re: Ceramic Coatings

    Hey guys,

I've just put my gloss black OZ wheels with winter rubber on my Nardo A6. It looks awesome and I used the remainder of my Geyon Rim Q2 when doing my car and one of my family's Honda. IIRC, this product was recommended by OLYS6, whom I've learned is a helpful perfectionist (thanks Oly!!!). I've generally noticed very little sticks to these wheels and they generally look good having been coated now for (5) winter seasons. Should I spend $50 again to do the remaining set of wheels, or should I spend the same amount, and try NexGen on a portion of the body panels on my car?

I thought if I got the NexGen, I might decontaminate my trunk and rear bumper, clay both, do a two step polish and treat the rear with NexGen, and treat the sides of the car with my traditional - old fashion - sealant for winter after proper preparation.... I've never done ceramic on my body panels or on any of the other cars my family has --- only the black winter and silver summer wheels..

    Thoughts would be much appreciated.

Also, by way of background, my car goes in to the shop in early January of new interior and a new right front fender (3/4 plywood left a dent last year and someone must have tagged the car in a parking lot recently but since I'm going to have the interior replaced after the oil spill some of you may have read about, I'm having everything brought back to near perfection for a daily.

The painter will be blending passenger door and hood to match. His work is excellent, and we discussed my not touching the hood or door as his guys will finish those with the body work.

    Thanks!!

If your hood and passenger door are in mint condition right now (especially if protected currently with PPF), ask the painter NOT to blend. The front fender is a urethane composite; the hood and door shell are aluminum, the roof and rear quarter are steel. All surfaces take paint slightly different from the others and Nardo isn't a color I'd expect to need blending for the sake of UV weathering.

Instead, ask him to paint a new fender off the car and spend a few extra dollars to spray out samples until he gets the paint blending right for Nardo. It will save you tons of money and retain virgin paint on the door and hood. Due to environmental controls and technique, very few painters can apply paint to the same precision and depth that the factory does. Save your money for XPEL afterwards.

I have zero experience with Gyeon coatings and don't really see it recommended around my circle of detailers. Not that it's bad, but all my experience is with Opticoat, CQuartz UK, and Gtechniq Crystal Serum. I've used all three and most pleased with the look and life of Opti-Pro.

Thanks for the comments. I found 1/4 of a bottle of Gtechniq my car care cabinet I forgot about. I think I’ll order that for the wheels, and get two coats on the face of each wheels and at least one coat on the inner barrel..

Partial paint correction and simple sealant for body panels now. Consider ceramic next year.

I've never heard of NexGen and had to look it up, seems to be a spray?

I've had my detailer use both CQuartz and Gtechniq in the past, and I love Gtechniq. The amount of depth (wetness?) is crazy. Not sure if that's something you'd really pick up on Nardo versus Mythos Black though, but the ease of cleaning and protection will certainly still be there.

If you were happy with the Gyeon rim protection I don't see the point in switching up. Wheels don't have nearly the learning curve the body does and if you've seen 5 seasons of protection from that product, that's quite impressive. Body work, I wouldn't trust myself to do ceramic. Undoing your screw ups isn't as easy as just polishing it off. My detailer had a brand new C8 Vette that another detailer did ceramic on and botched it bad. He ended up charging the guy an arm and a leg just for removal and then doing a proper coating. If you've got the time to muck with redoing it, good on you, but I can think of a million things I'd rather be doing with my time.

Great insight. I’ve paint corrected twice is (5) years and then sealed and waxed. I’ve done the same with my wife’s Q and recently paid for buff and wax. Her comment was that it looked nice but not like when I’ve done it. It typically take a total of 12-16 hours to get the car “right”’on my eyes…. I may stick with old school..!
