    Cam cap bolt very tight

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

I need to remove my cams to re-timing due to chain guides broken in many pieces. The cam cap bolts are so tight that it already killed 2 of my T30 socket already. How do you get them out? The manual indicated they are 5NM but it feels like they are like 50NM. I can only got like 3 out using bolt extractor tool. It is going to take me forever to take all the cap bolts out and I will need to replace all of them?

    I would try

High quallity T30, clean the bolts, t30 in it, tap them 1-3 times and loosen with a power wrench, what allows you to push harder on the bolt.
But didn't do this yet so can be wrong here.

Listen what alex said at first part.

As I said in your last post, you need a strong torx bit. Chrome vanadium or s2 allow bits work. I have the bluepoint (snap-on) quarter drive stubby torx, and a long wratchet. You can pickup a cheap set at harbor freight that is chrome vanadium I believe. Amazon sells s2 alloy bit sets that are very strong. Pretty much any socket that is a single piece, not insert, should be a strong enough metal.

I picked up a set of ICON Chrome vanadium torx bit from Harbor Freights and it didnt work. The bits got all twisted. So after watching the video, I pickup a set of Carlyle from Napa as mention and I hope this is stronger to get those bolts off.

Why can Audi use the standard head where it is much stronger and easier to use instead of these torx?

I just try a new set of Carlyle bit from Napa and it almost killed another bit. It is so tight. I'm not sure what to do next to get those bolts off. Can't keep killing the torx bits.

I guess they aren't what they used to be. In the past I had bought harbor freight brand and they were very strong. good luck with the carlyle. I would use a breaker bar or long ratchet instead of something impacting, but that's just me.

Looks like your 11mm socket trick worked but I will need to buy all new bolts. Thank you for the tip.

This company (vim tools) makes bits with enormous strength and will not break for this application. I have a set from this company for stubby Allen bits. I have over 50k in snap-on and matco tools. But I haven't found a reason to replace these. Wonderful tool company and a reasonable price.

The hammering at it solved most of the problem here probably. Did you tap it with the t30 also?

No, I just end up using the 11mm special socket and did the track. However, hammering all the bolt caused my socket head to flare out a bit.
