    Rearview Camera Recall (Facelift)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Got this in the mail this week, wondering if anyone has done it and how long it took:

    NHTSA: 22V742

Subject: Compliance Recall 91DZ-Rearview Camera Software

    Dear Audi Owner,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Audi has decided that certain 2021-2022 model year Audi vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, Rear Visibility.
Our records show that you are the
owner of a vehicle affected by this action

    What is the issue?

Due to a software issue, upon selecting reverse, a blank or black screen may be displayed instead of the rearview camera image. In certain cases, this issue may also cause the main unit to become inoperative which will lead to no image being displayed at all. A rearview camera screen that displays a blank or no image can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

    What will we do?

To correct this noncompliance, your authorized Audi dealer will update the infotainment system software. This work will take about two hours to complete and will be performed for you free of charge.
Please keep in mind that your dealer may need additional time for the preparation of the repair, as well as to accommodate their daily workshop schedule.

I’ve personally had this effect me so many times so I’m glad it’s fixed. Just don’t want the car to be sitting around for a few days while they have 0 loaners.

Huh, is it mandatory to have a rear view cam in NA?

Anyhow, MMI updates don't typically take longer than 30 minutes to be honest, they're just done through an SD card. If you can find the firmware online (search on Audiworld) you can even do it yourself. I can't see them wanting to keep the car sitting around though as it will just take up space.

Yes new cars must all have rear view cams, I think it started in 2016. Too many kids getting run over in driveways. It's not a fail your state inspection (MOT) type of thing, just a cars have to have it to be sold new sort of thing.

I knew that my camera being wacky wasn't my fault! It would occasionally just not work, but strangely it was the front camera that would show blank causing the whole system to stop working.

I don't plan on taking my car in anytime soon though in fear of them flagging it as a TD1 for it being tuned

Earlier B9's also had a camera TSB for top view, where the programming had to be updated to stop the car defaulting to radar image instead of top view camera next to the rear view every time the vehicle is restarted

The length of time for it to be done depends on whether or not the navigation database also has to be rebuilt.. Some users on AW reported that all of the cars brought in for the recall at his local dealership took 3-4 hours to complete the update because the nav database also had to be rebuilt. I have an appt in January to get mine done and plan on dropping it off instead of waiting -- because I know from OBDEleven that my nav system continuously throws the fault code for the nav database (even though it appears to be working)

At any rate -- the Audi procedure document for the recall advises that the MMI update also addresses a bunch of other unrelated issues with MMI problems such as freezing, unresponsive, etc.

My RV Camera always acts up on my 2018.... they should cover those too! freezes, lines out, doesn't come on, stays on for like a minute after I'm driving, video lags out as if im looking at a picture reel but only seeing every 4th picture.

I get the nav database corrupt error too. Guess I’m gonna have to plan on not having the car for a few hours. Luckily the Audi dealership I go to has the best birra taco restaurant I’ve ever been to across the street and a dope fried chicken place next door

I'm dropping my car off tomorrow morning for the recall. They said it's been taking them around 4 hours.

Took my car in yesterday for the 20k service and the recall. Picked it up this morning and while the tech said they were able to do the update, the camera system still isn't working lol

Previously I'd been having issues with the camera system not work at all, sometimes flickering, sometimes just the front camera. Works occasionally but not consistently. Figured it was related to the recall but I'm not so sure now.

You can get an OEM camera from AliExpress for very cheap and replace it. It would take about 10-15 mins to do?

Are you thinking that my front camera is the cause of the issue?

Apologies, I was talking about the rear cam.

Having just reread your comment, it seems that the control module for the cameras in the trunk would be the most likely culprit for your issue (unless it’s your MMI behaving weird).

You can try an MMI update with an SD Card or you can try replacing the camera control module.

Ah no worries. My MMI hasn't had any other issues so I'm also thinking it's the camera control module, as I've seen in other posts related to this problem.

Do you happen to know if the camera control module can be coded without dealer tools, ala VAG-COM or otherwise?

It can be coded (adaptation, like changing basic settings of it) but it cannot be parameterised without VCP / ODIS.

If you bought a brand new one it would require parameterisation (basically telling it what car it’s being used on, which particular configuration it should work to).

Probably something I should just let the dealer do, especially since it's definitely under warranty
