    a6 - sounds - wobble - harmonics

    hi
    second post

    2013 a6, 3.0t sport package
very recent new brakes and rotors all the way around. tires less than 30,000 km
one front bearing replaced by previous owner car has 99,000 km

when driving at hiway speeds there is a noticeable sound, not a hum more like if you had one window cracked and you get that air hammer. however all windows are up, hard to tell where it comes from. i listen at braking or lower speeds. it dissipates. reminds me of rotors warped but as i said they are basically new.

is there a known issue, perhaps the other rotor? or am i hearing the carrier bearing support sound? any input appreciated before i start tearing things apart

    cheers

I had that same sound and it was a wheel bearing. I have a stretch of brand new asphalt on the highway near my house that is super quiet and I was able to do some weaving on it to figure out that it was louder when I turned one direction vs the other. Wheel bearings aparantly tend to go in pairs on our cars, so if one was fairly recently replaced, it could likely be the other one on its way out. I had to take my car to a shop to find out which wheel it was so they could put it on a lift and use a stethoscope while the wheels spun. Not a super difficult diy repair but it is super easy to accidentally strip the triple square bolts holding it in
