MMI and screen will not power on

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2014 S6 and out of nowhere today the mmi and screen will not power on when I start the vehicle. I have checked all fuses and cannot find any that have been blown. What is strange is that if I just turn the car on without starting it, the mmi and screen will come on. Has anyone experienced this or have any idea where to begin looking?

Pops out but you get a black screen?

MMI and screen will not power on

It will not even pop out when started unless I press the button to pop out the screen. The screen is black when I manually make it pop out.

Also, on the cockpit screen I get an error saying that multimedia is unavailable.

This is a good video to repair the black screen.

As for not popping out you can try to lubricate the drive when you remove it to fix the wires

Thank you for the video. I do not think I am experiencing the same issue though. My radio will not function with the black screen as described in the video and I also have an error on the cockpit screen that says multimedia is unavailable.

Also, if the car is powered on and not started the screen will pop out and display the car systems menu.

Did you do a manual reboot of the MMI system?

To be clear, ignition on and engine off, the MMI has full normal function, but ignition on and engine on, the MMI screen stays retracted and when manually extended the screen stays black? Certainly try hard reboot. Also may want to scan for codes. If your battery is original (2014), may be beginning to fail, with voltage variations that affect various components.

Update…I visited the dealer today and they stated the MMI control using was bad. They offered to replace this for the low low price of $5,000. I found the exact same model on eBay for $200. Does anyone know if installing the control module from another vehicle will work?

Wow, that's crazy. Why is it so expensive? Is it that complicated? Or just outright gouging?

What a shame these cars are so expensive. Doesn't have to be so.

    Good luck.

The replacement of the control unit in the dash is simple. Audi is charging that much for the control unit itself.

Don't know about that, but if you shop around, other dealer parts departments may charge about $4,000 for the identical part. Maybe your dealer will price match the lowest price from another dealer. You have B&O sound system? Curiously, that part is for 2014 S6. For 2015 S6, part number is 4G0035746H and costs about $2,300 also for B&O audio. Hopefully someone else knows if that part needs to be coded to the car.

I had this exact problem about a year ago. At first, my MMI would not extend out when the car started but i could still play audio. The cause was there was a short in the wiring powering the motor that extends the screen. While i was troubleshooting this, the audio controller got too much current, and i heard a pop...of course then the audio didn't work whatsoever. Took it to the dealer and they also quoted me about $4500 to replace the control module (at least $4000 of that was for the part itself).
I did buy a used one online for around $200 and physically installed it. It wasn't too bad but one of the cables connects to the back is very short and had to be connected last. The dealer had to update the firmware on it, which made it function. It's worth trying a used one.

I do not have the B&O, just the Bose. We will see what happens. New one should be here on the 16th.

That’s encouraging. Do you recall what the dealer charged to update the firmware? I have a new one that will be here next week.

What do I know? The part number on the ticket in post #10 is for a 2014 S6 with B&O per the Audi parts website. The part number for a 2014 S6 without B&O is 4G0035664F with list price about $4,000 and discounted to about $3,300. Seems like you have decided to go with a new unit; maybe check the part number before it's installed and look it up yourself. Maybe one of the AZ parts experts will also chime in.

Thank you. When you put the new unit in would anything respond? Or did you have to take it to be coded at the dealer before any MMI functions would work?

my unit has been freezing and rebooting a lot. I heard you just update the firmware and it will solve the issue. There is a guy on Facebook Ben Weaving that does the firmware and map updates for $100. He sends you 3 SD cards with instructions for you to do it yourself. The dealer will tell you anything to nickel and dime its customers. I stopped going to them for some shit they tried to pull on me. But yeah if you can find the part used go for it...not worth paying 4k for a new part.

Sorry I have been traveling and didn't see this.
No, when I put the Radio Control Unit (control module) in the car, it didn't seem to do anything different to the MMI. The control unit's firmware had to be updated by the dealer for the MMI to work.

Any progress or updates on your MMI?

Not yet. I have been traveling the last couple of weeks. The new MMI unit is installed but nothing seems to be working. I am getting the same error messages on the cockpit screen. The screen will open now when I press any MMI button or when I press the button on the dash to open the screen which seems to be a positive for me because the old unit was unresponsive. I am home next week and have an appointment at the dealer for Monday. Hopefully they can update the firmware an all is good from there.

I just wanted to provide an update on the final resolution. The dealer could not program the new MMI controller to the car to make it work. I kept reading and reading on the internet searching for an answer. I came across this add on eBay for a company who does repair to MMI controllers. I placed a link below. I searched the company name and they are located in the Houston Texas area which I happen to live in this area. I called the company to ask if I could deliver my MMI controller to them for repair. They agreed, but also wanted to diagnose the issue in my car before they took my unit for repair. Within 5 minutes of being at their office I had a working MMI system again. The controller was not bad, it was actually the antenna amplifier/tuner in the trunk that did not have power. He installed a fiber loop bypassing the antenna/tuner and everything worked except the radio. I agreed to this.

When I got home I was able to troubleshoot the power issue for that module and my full MMI system is functioning again.

Thank you to the Bavlogic team. I am not sure anyone else would have figured this out. 2 dealers in the Houston area failed to find the problem and both offered repair solutions that were not the root cause and both quotes were over $5,000.
