Can you take a quick look under your engine cover...

and tell me if this is normal? It looks and feels like a little piece of soft rubber gasket is sticking out from under the oil separator assembly... The little orange piece in the pics. But it's hard to tell if it's by-design (like a tab/tang) or if it's an installation error. I'm trying to diagnose an annoying whine at idle to ~2000 RPM and it might be coming from the oil separator.

'23 RS3 here, so that would be great if an 8Y owner could look. 8V is good data point as well.

    Thanks!

I have the same tab visible on my 2018 8v. Have you checked your oil cap. Inspect vacuum lines and connection points. I've recently replaced my oil cap as it was loose and not sealing properly. Check on the amount of suction or pressure when trying to take it off. Also replaced my gas cap as the gasket was in rough shape and had alot of slop in it.

    Much appreciated! Thanks for confirming.

I did pull the oil cap while idling. It definitely has a pretty strong vacuum, but I assume it should. Removing the oil cap didn't seem to change the noise drastically.

I'm still suspicious of the oil separator assembly, as the noise seems to come from that area. It almost sounds like a belt whine/slip, but it's not coming from the accessory belt from what I can tell. Maybe turbo? Ugh. Hope not.

Ugh. Brand new RS3 is going to the dealer Friday to get inspected. They're suspicious of the accessory belt and tensioner based on my description over the phone but we'll see what comes out of it.

Symptoms are a squealing at idle up to ~1500 RPMs. And then a rattle or buzz between 2000-3000 RPM, mostly when engine braking.

Any other ideas of things to check or recommend to the dealer?

Fingers crossed it's minor - and it realistically should be since when it left the factory it was 'sound' based on their testing - Good luck!

Pretty certain the orange tab is part of the gasket that goes under PCV plate. It’s supposed to be like that. You should also have one where the intake manifold and throttle body mate up as well.

Good news: the dealer acknowledged the noise isn't normal and wants to make it right

Bad news: they don't know what the issue is and want the car for 2-3 days to really investigate it with a senior tech. It'll be a couple weeks before they can get me in.

Good news: the dealer believes they found the problem and the parts will arrive tomorrow!

Bad news: it's a new DSG lol

It's not the worst thing in the world. But the car only has 650 miles on it, so just a bit apprehensive about a major component getting replaced. It should be fine. I've got 4 years of warranty to make sure they did it all correctly. It's not that hard of a job.
