    Engine making ticking sound

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Does anyone else have an issue where the engine makes a sort of ticking sound when accelerating and driving. It gets more pronounce as the car is moving quicker and can be heard when driving against a wall, left and right sides.

    Any help is highly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Don't think that is normal!!! Bring it back as the car is still under warranty. Let us know what the issue is?

Video or any demo would really help.

    +1 for Rocker arms

Skip to 1:37 , He compares the black RS5 engine which sounds normal, and then white S5 which has the clicking/ticking

Sorry, I’ll try to upload a video. But, from what I’m reading in that thread^^ it looks like it’s probably the rocker arms that are bad…sigh. I’ll see if I get a quote from a local VW certified shop soon.

    I have a question:

    What is milleage?

How often and which oil do You use (0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, etc.)?

It’s got just over 54,000 and of course now out of warranty. I do oil changes every 5-7k and use Liquimolly 0w20 from fcp euro.

Thanks, so one of my theories, that long life oil change is responsible for this is wrong.

Another theory, that thin oil like 5W-20 with low HTHS is still on the table.

Yea, I read that maybe changing the type of oil may help. I think I’ll try 5w-20/30 and see if I notice a difference.

    Update:

I did an oil change and used some 5w40 rated for this engine and it still makes the ticking noise.

I went to a well known German car shop to get a quote on replacing the rocker arms and they quoted me around $5k. Looks like I’ll be going through with the repair in the next month or so.
I’ll make sure to update this thread if there is anything they find other than the rocker arm issue.

So it looks like it wasn’t the rocker arms at all since my car was the 2019+ built model, it already included the updated rocker arms. I went to TheShop CT and they confirmed that it was a bad gasket seal in the turbo inlet from IE that was installed. It was the V1 inlet and according to them these have had issues with having bad gasket seals. They replaced the inlet with an updated one and now the car is back to normal. Luckily only had to spend a portion of what I thought I was going to spend!

Close call there! Glad they took the time to figure it out rather than just blindly take your $5k.

That is good that you don't have to spend $5K but just bad gaskets seal probably cost around $1000 or less I am guessing.
