    04 A4 3.0 HELP, timing from scratch

Hello all I took on a project from another person who started a timing belt job, and couldn’t finish it. So I’m finishing it.. with that being said I need help setting base timing on this engine because I pretty much can’t rely and the last person for info and I’m not trying to do this twice.. so I have cams locked with special tools(they should only fit one way correct? Meaning I can’t have the cams 180 off from each other), im also having difficulties finding how to set the crank at TDC.
I see there is a mark on the front cover, but I can’t get the crank lock pin to go into a position that ACTUALLY locks the crank into place.

I hope someone can give me some advice because I’m lost right now

Note: I have cyl3 @ tdc, cams locked, crank pulley lines up with timing mark on cover, crank doesn’t lock with pin

Correct, the 3.0 cam lock tools fit on the camshafts only one way. The cam "flat" where the tool fits is thicker on one side.

For the crank, try using a breaker bar and socket to turn the crank a few degrees off the cover timing mark. I find it easiest to do this from underneath so I can move crank, try lock pin, move crank, try lock pin... If the timing belt is installed then all four camshaft bolts should be loose (so the crankshaft can move).

This engine should have a crank pin you screw into the block on the drivers side underneath. Good luck and may god have mercy on your soul.
