Who has info on drop in B9 S4 rear subwoofer upgrade

Is there a upgrade for the dismal rear subwoofer in the B9 S4? I have the B&O system and that sub sucks. Looking for something that will drop in and possibly work with the stock amp if possible 1st before I go to looking for a while new setup as an option.

Subwoofer is a 10 or 12 inch 8 ohm dual voice coil. A recommended subwoofer is the kicker compC series. I’d rather fab a box and put a higher quality subwoofer and amp combo.

Im 48, not interested at all in a box or separate amp. I value trunk space over having an enclosure in my trunk.

You can get pre-made boxes that fit into the cubby holes in the side of the trunk that don’t take up any additional space. It makes a big difference in terms of sound quality.

Lol I’m 51 yet live and drive like I’m 30.. and tried the drop in Kicker and sounded like poop.
Did a small single cheap box with mono amp and sounds great.
Also advise to Dynamat as much of that tray as possible. I did under rear seat, tray, trunk and battery area.
    Just my old .02
Good luck either way you go!

Went with the kicker 44CWCD104 myself within about a month of buying the car :). No box, works with oem amp, fits fine under the rear shelf, and is a noticeable improvement over oem. I also put dynamat over the rear shelf while I was in there.

    Cheers

It’ll be better than stock, but far from a quality subwoofer. Im not sure what age has to do with it. I’d rather buy the a4 rear trunk box and put a W6v4 in there and amps are very easy to install due to our battery location (trunk). Quality has no age limit and once you’ve had quality hi-fi speakers in a car it’s hard not to have it.

Super. And an RS4 is much better than an S4. In fact an RS6 is better than each of these. Why are you driving an inferior S4?

Because a RS4 isn't availablein the US but I do plan on getting one if they ever release one in avant form here. Not sure where you're getting at or trying to be combative? I also had that exact kicker subwoofer installed in my last audi and it was better, but not what I was after. an infinite baffle subwoofer is not going to sound great compared to a sealed box, especially with a subwoofer not really designed to be an infinite baffle. If your goal is to have a marginally better sounding subwoofer the kicker is fine, but there are other solutions that's about the same work as to swap out your rear deck subwoofer.

OP if you get the kicker, order a 10inch MDF ring as it helps mount the subwoofer easier to the rear deck. I have a few lying around if you end up needing one.

Goals, now you've got it. I believe the OP expressed his at the top of this thread.

I have two first place trophies in the advanced category in IASCA from my younger years. I've been holding off upgrading the same BO sub...but I'm getting close. I just don't want to lose trunk space.

    Here you go:

It helps. Some will feel it's enough (give it time to break in) and some will want more. A boxed sub will always be better but the basser compartment subs are all sealed boxes, need and amp and won't play much below 40hz. I was happy with the amount of bass but I added an amp because I wanted to change the crossover frequency.

Dynamat the entire rear deck and seal EVERY opening on the bottom that isn't the subwoofer and that helps A LOT

There are 2 12w3's in there with a side port on the passenger side.

Have a JL XD600 running them. I love it, can actually feel them

Also have a JL VX600/6 running focal 165k3 3ways up front. They are a little bright for me but 100x times better than Stock

Nice setup, I really like JL and Focal setups. I used to run a 12w6 on the Slash 500.1 and the Focal AS165 on the Alpine PDX amp. Have you thought of swapping the tweeters? My focal tweeters were a little bright. My buddy gave me some leftover Hybrid Audio tweeters and they made the sound much more warm and balanced. If you think your speakers are a little too bright, I recommend swapping out the tweeters to see if that helps.
