    Top Speed?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Now that pretty much all of us are tuned with the speed limiter removed, what’s the fastest mph/kph you’ve been in your B9? Any idea what the top speed is for stage 1/2/3? Do we run out of gear on stage 3 or are we limited by aero?

165 is the fastest I've gone and I just ran out of road, so I guess that's what I'm limited by lol

Yea you need a lot of road on the top end. These things really don't pull very hard past 120, on stock turbo anyway. Top speed isn't really these cars thing. This isn't like a big FI V8 that's still pulling like a train at 140+. Racing hellcats and forced induction mustangs and similar you see this pretty evidently. They're running you down hard past 100.

These cars are killer 0-60 and 1/4 mile on street tires and unprepped surfaces. Stage 2 E85 and you can whoop on most stock hellcat drivers on the street from a dig. Try a 60-160 roll race and it won't go your way. Similarly if the hellcat is on DRs on a prepped track with a good driver, you'd be neck and neck at best or lose.

165 is still pretty impressive! I’ve been to the speed limiter a few times (before it was removed).

You can run 201mph on Stage 2, haven’t heard anyone actually try and go any faster.

You know of someone who’s gone 201mph on stage 2??

Yep, on the Autobahn. He used to do high speed runs all the time.

He actually had a blowout at 190 something after a while. Managed to get the car stopped safely and no damage.

I don’t think he has his S4 any more, pretty sure he swapped to a Cupra VZ5 or something.

How did they address the transmission going into limp mode at 196MPH?

I’m not sure. I know he was custom tuned though, not sure if he had a TCU tune, this was quite a while back.

Could also be speedo error at those speeds especially with a slightly diff diameter tire/wheel combo. Being off a few mph at 190+ is probably realistic.

Definitely, I imagine 190 GPS would be much more realistic but the transmission would be reading 201 from a single data source the same as the ECU. It might only be certain box codes that have the transmission enter limp mode when above 196, I’m not sure.

This is very true and is evident when you try a 60-130 pull in a B9 S4. They just heat soak too bad even with a larger I/C and the times show it.

yep and it was S4 wagon... so heavier. I cant remember but it could have even been stage 1 not 2.

Yep, thats the downside of relying on forced induction alone to create displacement. You get a lot of heat. It's not the same as running say 8-12 psi on 5 to 7 liter V8 that gulps air just fine on its own.

I got up to 170 on a 60-120 pull. Dont advise that lol. I think on a long airstrip you could pull up to 200, but it would take a lot of time.

176 mph on stage 2 034 e85 just ran out of room. Waiting on tte810 to come in should be able to get to 190 on stage 3.

I never really make it past 155 on these roads in SoCal they're too bumpy and aren't straight enough. Gotta head out to Vegas or Arizona for that

I have been up to 288kmph or 178mph in my RS4 with Stage 1. The car can definitely go more.

What exactly happens when the tranny goes into limp mode? Does the engine just cut power?

It only selects 2 gears, which I think are 2nd and 5th. It drops engine power to no more than 50hp and the dash lights up like a Christmas tree along with loud error beeps. You have to clear the codes out before it will drive normally again.

This can be manipulated with wheel/tire size. Im assuming the trans goes into limp mode when it hits a certain RPM in 8th gear.

TO the best of my knowledge it measure the output shaft speed, and also the car doesn't have enough horsepower to hit top speed in 8th gear. I can't recall if it's 7th or even 6th when it does, but it's not 8th.

That would make sense. Pretty sure it’s sixth.

Depends on where your redline is but my math: 6,500 rpm, 2.848 FD, 26" tire, about 176.54mph in top of 6th. More if you shift higher, my E85 tune seems to hit 6,500 rpm vs higher revs from gasoline tunes. I'd guess somewhere in 7th gear though.

Pretty much bang on. Here is speeds for each gear with a 255/35/19 tire at 6500rpms.

    Tyre Circumference = 2076.91 mm
    1st Gear = 60.33 km/h - 37.41 mph
    2nd Gear = 90.49 km/h - 56.1 mph
    3rd Gear = 135.05 km/h - 83.73 mph
    4th Gear = 170.61 km/h - 105.78 mph
    5th Gear = 221.33 km/h - 137.22 mph
    6th Gear = 284.41 km/h - 176.33 mph
    7th Gear = 338.98 km/h - 210.17 mph
    8th Gear = 426.4 km/h - 264.37 mph

    2nd Gear = 97.45 km/h - 60.42 mph
    3rd Gear = 145.43 km/h - 90.17 mph

I came up with this table awhile back to calc optimal shifting points. This is for a tire with diam of 26.02 in (circum = 81.74 in)

Do you realize what this means? It means we could go almost 285MPH!!!! :)

I'm sure a tall enough cliff can be found ;). Now lets calculate the terminal velocity of a S4 haha.

I'm no pro, but if you're tuned ECU/TCU would the trans still go into limp mode or would that safety be removed like the limiter?

When the tunes became available that TCU limit was found a short time later when someone tried to go 200. It might be there for a good reason. It might not.
