    2014 A6 TDI Oil and coolant leak.(Connecticut)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking to see if anyone has a diagnosis suggestions, similar experience, or can recommend a shop in Connecticut who could work on this sort of car?

    History:
    2014
    A6
    TDI
    225,000 Miles
    Owned car since new.
All factory recommended services performed. New battery Jan 2021.
Fuel, air, cabin, oil filters all regularly and recently changed.
Diesel gate scandal modifications performed at 82K miles. Nothing significant to report from the modifications.
MPG has not changed with recent leaks and CEL.
    Never overheated the car.
No milky/foam on oil fill cap.
Oil change oil appears (visibly) to be the same as always.

    Symptoms:
    1. Oil leak: Smells like a leaky EGR or PCV type smell (I have no clue if this thing even has an EGR or PCV) smoke/oil, not necessarily burnt oil. It does not smell like oil dripping on a hot exhaust. I use less than ½ a quart of oil between changes (5k mile)

    2. Coolant leak seems more aggressive. I have had to add coolant every few thousand miles. It gets below the “min” line, but not enough to trip a warning light.

    3. Oil in coolant. Coolant is no longer pink. Coolant has black/oily film to it.

    4. CEL: 17561 - NOx Sensor 2 Bank 1 P229F 00 [237] - Implausible Signal
    MIL ON

Took the car to a local independent shop highly recommended by coworkers with late model M series BMWs.

    Independent shop diagnosis:
    Rear main seal leaking.
Flushed coolant 3 times and still coolant still appears “oily”
Pressurized coolant, no visible leaking but pressure dropped.

They suspect a bad head gasket but didn’t have the tools to do a compression test.
    Rational:
    1. No visible coolant leaking as pressure dropped.
    2. NOX sensor could be getting contaminated by coolant/oil downstream.
    3. Oil in coolant

I tried 2 other independent shops who didn’t even want to touch the car!

So again has anyone experienced anything similar? Or can you recommend a place in Connecticut who would be able to work on this car.

    Thanks

    Matt

Head gasket leak sounds likely to me.

I myself also weep from my rear main seal, but it's not too bad. No idea on shops but I think there are some in North Jersey

Is the Coolant leak coming from the V, could be the erg oil cooler, cos it’s deep in the V of the engine the gasket breaks down. It’s a manifold off job

Id have to go look closer. I removed the top plastic cover but honestly didn't look deeper! I will check it out with more lightning and see if I can spot anything.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't get the feeling the rear main was a big concern, so good to hear I am not the only one, and its not a huge leak

As bthethy said, it's more than likely leaking in the "V". 059 121 737 AM is the coolant valve that starts to leak coolant everywhere in the "V". This then takes out the gaskets (and can corrode the base plate) of the oil cooler just below it which is most likely why you have oil in the coolant. These failures are common and well documented on the 3.0 TDI. I had mine done last year before it got to the point of the oil/coolant mixing. Just make sure they replace all of the little plastic fittings, flanges, etc. while in there as they will be brittle and their respective gaskets will be rock hard.

There's a long thread explaining all of it here: https://www.clubtouareg.com/threads/...277066/page-16

Yes I had mine done about 6 months ago too, it’s very difficult to see into the V as there’s loads of stuff in the way, but if u use a torch you may be able to see some coolant pooling in the V. Parts cost me about £700 and labour was bout the same. Good luck
