Quattro ultra problems, stage 2 second gear surging

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Recently purchased 2017 a4 quattro with IE stage 2. Car has a 6 speed mt, and I believe the quattro ultra system. It seems in second gear pulls even general acceleration there seems to be gear or clutch slippage. I have tuned it back to stock and it is still occuring. It's rather harsh can hear the rear end clunk even when It catches. But only in second gear. I just checked the rear end fluid and flushed it out. No pieces came out gladly. I can't find a fluid spec on the all wheel drive clutches so I'm not touching that, yet. But it could also be the rear coupler solenoid not holding.

This reminds me of times I have had a bad half shaft. But only in second. No codes that I have seen yet. I did not realize how much more they have added to the awd system since 2009....this is stupid complex.

2017 A4 sedan should be Torsen; it was the A4 allroad that came with quattro ultra out of the gate. Maybe the 6MT also came with ultra out of the gate.

Note the pic of the front right of the quattro ultra rear diff. If you really want to confirm, look there. Or the label on top of the rear of the rear diff, if that's easier. Or your PR codes sticker. GH1 is Torsen, GH4 is ultra. Or the code (three letters) for your DL382 transmission could be cross referenced also.

Sounds like a cooked clutch to me. These cars barely hold the torque on a stage 2 tune on a 6spd manual.

All B9 6MT are quattro with ultra - Might be worth referencing the TSB mentioned in this post

I bet you're feeling the AWD clutch slipping. Change the fluid per the TSB instructions and go from there. ECS sells the transfer case fluid you need.

copy, ordered the fluid monday. Funny, ecs shipping is now far cheaper than Europa....I remember a time when it was outrageous.

Keep us posted. We're finally hitting a time where mileage and age is catching up with the Ultra transmissions so issues are popping up. I was very concerned when my b9 started acting up, but was relieved after the fluid change solved it all.

Is pretty straight forward to change? Does anyone have a documented tutorial on how to do this by chance? I’ve changed transmission fluids before in my manual civics but never in an awd car that has sever area where fluid can be changed.

Yes 2 5mm bolts, only takes like 2 cups of fluid...terrible idea. I'll post pics when I compete the second drain for before and after. So far it is better, hardly any surge. But I'm not trying hard until I change the fluid again.

I almost feel like this should be a yearly maintenance. It's a rather critical component.

I was going to document it when I did the job myself, but it's so straightforward. Remove the rear splash guard, open fill port, remove drain bolt, replace drain bolt, fill fluid until it drips out the fill hole, and close it up. The TSB says to do a drain/fill/drain/fill if you experience these issues and if you're clean, a 1 L bottle will do the trick.

The fill hole here has my pump hose going into it. The drain bolt is the bolt on the bottom. I think its a 6mm allen?

So I'm in the market for a B9 Allroad and was wondering if there is a way to check if the car had this TSB performed with prior ownership? It seems if caught early enough a fluid change is all that is needed as well?

Best would be to ask current owner who there servicing dealer was and then pose the question to that dealer. Carfax should have the original selling dealer if owner can't help. Challenge always is if there have mean multiple previous owners as folks don't often keep all their service records and pass them on when selling.
