In June the starter on my S8 died. I used the level under the floor mat to engage neutral so it could be towed. Towed it home and then towed it again to a shop. I had the starter replaced and once they replaced it the car will not come out of drive. It is throwing a P17F9 00 (044) Mechanical Malfunction code for 8724 Park Lock (see attached picture). The shop has ensured me that the manual neutral release if functioning correctly. If you start the car the S icon for sport mode on the shifter is greyed out. If you start it and shift it out of park it will, almost immediately put itself back in park. We have replaced the solenoids in the mech unit based on a low reading on one of them based on information I have received from ZF. We are almost out of ideas of what could possibly be wrong with it. Everyone we have talked with at Audi says either to replace the mech unit or the whole transmission but how did it suddenly just stop working when it had given me zero issues? Does anybody have any idea when could be the problem? I have read many different things about this but none have helped so far.
