"Rear camera software recall" software update

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello friends, myAudi notified me that my 2021 RS5 needed to come in for a software update. When I spoke to the service department (Audi San Francisco), they said it was a general software update for all systems, including MMI. So far as I can tell from the internet, this is just a fix for the rear camera issue. But I'm hoping there may be some other updates coming along for the ride. Service tech told me he'd print out the list of changes included in the update and I'll post it if there's anything meaningful there. Does anyone else know?

Looks like the 2021 Q/SQ5 has the same recall items. As far as I can tell reading other posts, it’s a general software update that also addresses the rear camera issues. Interesting that some have stated it takes several hours to complete.

    NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V742000

Manufacturer Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

    Components BACK OVER PREVENTION

Potential Number of Units Affected 170,296
    Summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 Audi A8, RS7, RS6 Avant, RS5 Sportback, RS5 Coupe, Q8, Q7, Q5 Sportback, S4 Sedan, Q5, A7, A6, A6 Allroad, A5 Sportback, A5 Coupe, A5 Cabrioleet, A4 Sedan, A4 Allroad, E-Tron Sportback Quattro, SQ7, S5 Cabriolet, E-Tron Quattro, SQ8, SQ5 Sportback, SQ5, S8, S7, S6 Sedan, S5 Sportback, S5 Coupe, 2022 E-Tron GT, and 2021-2022 RSQ8 vehicles. Due to a software issue, a blank or black screen may be displayed instead of the rearview camera image when the vehicle is placed in reverse gear. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
    Remedy

Dealers will update the infotainment unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 2, 2022. Owners may contact Audi's customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 91DZ.
    Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

ALSO -- noted this in Audi's tech document is whats in the attachment.. Audi states the software update addresses other issues such as rebooting, freezing, navigation database corrupt (which I always see when I scan my S4 with OBDEleven) -- specifically DTC B126CF0 is always recorded for me.

Little update on my end: software update did take the dealer service center about 4 hours to complete. My personal settings were preserved. The list RickNY posted RE the updates is the same list that I received from them. I had some issues connecting CarPlay again. Just had to stop the car, delete the connection, and reconnect. What I noticed right away is that the MMI is probably 2x faster than before. I can switch to the Home screen and pop around the menus with minimal lag. So far, so good.

I believe safety recalls have no time limit on them. You can get them anytime, even long after warranty expires. If this is the case, I will probably not bring my car in until, or unless my screen fails.

Got the notice for my 21SQ. Apparently the update has been bricking cars for a few hours.

I wonder how this update would affect, if at all, an ECU that has been turned.

The recall notice allows dealers to claim up to 3h 20 min of labor to complete - there are some instances where some cars will take longer than others..

Can confirm, it is a broad MMI update and is much more than just the backup camera. I am currently in the process of purchasing a 2021 S5, The dealer has tried for 3 days now to complete, but the computer that is programming the updates freezes up and they cannot get it working again. Apparently they have been in constant communication with Ingolstadt to no avail- and Dealers cannot legally sell the car with this outstanding recall. I do believe the dealership is doing everything they can, and communication has been great. If I were any of you, I would wait- and probably a good while as something is not right.
