    Should I sell my A4 and buy a S4?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I posted this first in the B7 A4 section since that’s where I’ve been on az, but figured I’d post here too for some additional S4 insight:

Been a while since I’ve posted here. Leveled up my car fixing game a lot and started working in a shop as a B tech. Not terribly scared of timing chains if I have to do it. Anything else I should know about S4s?

Thinking I can sell my A4 for about enough to cover a B6 S4, there doesn’t seem to be that much price difference on the market rn, but I’d appreciate insight into the pricing as well.

Think I could get $10k for my car if I’m willing to wait for the right buyer? Super well maintained, extensively modified stage 2 car. 2nd owner, maint records from new.

Anyone else thinking of changing it up?

The V8 is a lot of fun. It's an old platform, so stuff breaks and wears out.

If you get the opportunity, test drive an S4 with exhaust and a Jackal tune at the minimum, since those are probably the first couple of things you'll do to it.

The B7s supposedly stave off timing chain guides for longer than the B6s, but I think their eventual replacement is written on the piece of paper inside each B6/B7 S4's fortune cookies. Some just come up sooner than others. The rattle is pretty tell-tale.
I'm still listening for that rattle!

I definitely plan to test drive something before I sell my A4. I don’t anticipate it being underwhelming but I need to make sure it’s the upgrade I’m looking for.

I was under the impression tunes didn’t do much for these cars, but I was definitely planning some type of exhaust. Been listening to S4 exhaust compilations on YouTube while I work

Take all the issues associated with a 15+ y/o B6/B7(Headlinder, window regulators, broken arm rest/glove box, random failures of the comfort module, etc, etc) then add an engine that requires service position or engine out when doing anything other than changing spark plugs. Now add two extra radiators and 12mpg around town.

If it's a project/weekend car, go for it.

For a daily, I wouldn't; from a person that loves the B6/7 platform. Even the B8s are starting to get kind of old.

I just picked up a B7 S4. It has 118K on the clock. It had tons of service records from Audi. Even with all the service history, the car needs a lot of work. The power steering is on the way out, transmission solenoids need to be replaced, upper control arms need replaced ( they were replaced by Audi once before), and lower oil pan is leaking. I have already replace the oil filter housing o-rings, valley pan gasket and check valves, and oil cooler o-rings. This is my first Audi. I love the car, but if I had to do it over again I would have bought a newer S4 maybe a B8 or B8.5. I love the V8 sound!!! (mufflers deleted)

I don’t think my gf would tolerate a 3rd carcass in the driveway! I’ve got 2 VW rabbits on top of the A4.

Tempting though, how much do S4 engines go for?
