    Openpilot finally working in B8.5

    Hi all,

    I'm Stefan from Germany.

Maybe you already heard of the Openpilot project from Comma.ai.
It offers a open source software to retrofit some great lane assist / autonomous driving features to your car. Only cheap hardware needed.
Unfortunately it does not support Audi S4/S5 B8.5, yet.

Last year I started to add support for the Audi S5 B8.5 to the Openpilot software. And since end of last year I have it working in my car.
Now it is also confirmed that it works in the S4 as well.

As of now it still has some limitations:
    - Only lateral control (steering). Stock ACC is still used for longitudinal control
    - Steering torque is limited (but enough for highway use)

It is already useful and I like using it. That's why I thought I share this with you.

I published my code changes on GitHub:
    https://github.com/SBieger/openpilot

Oh, and here is a video of it:

Let my know your thoughts and feel free to ask questions.

    Stefan

    This looks great!
Maybe I'm late to the game here, but how are you displaying the gauges in your MMI? I'd love to have at least some temp controls displayed.

The gauges are completely independent of the Openpilot.
For info about the gauges, check this thread about "FIS-Control MMI":

This is awesome! Would it work on Q5 as well? Do you plan on supporting throttle?

I have not tested in the Q5, but chances are that it just works right away.

I already identified the needed CAN bus signals of the ACC to control throttle and brakes. I follow the Openpilot developement of the MQB platform. As soon as they have support for longitudinal control on MQB, I think I can easily add it for Audi B8.5, too.
Only problem could be, that recent Openpilot software has discontinued support for the old Comma 2 hardware (that I have) and will only work with Comma 3.

That's awesome. My friend has this for his rav4, but hasn't installed it yet. Curious, I was under the impression that this would only work if your car had some form of stock auto steering or lane assist to work?

I’d pay to be able to switch between ACC and normal cruise control - it’s terrible and the absolute worst part of the driver assistance package. I haven’t looked* into this in a while but it’s strange to me that the A8s from the same year have both ACC and can override/revert to normal cruise.

I'm wondering if I can just swap in the ACC ABS module to get brake control? I'd like to see if we can just use visual only for ACC instead of the audi ACC since they were super stingy on adding it and it's a PITA to add on.

Hey, this is impressive! I have a 2014 RS4 without ACC and Lane Assist, but the car has the active steering and abs module that is same as the car with ACC.
Question -> I'm just getting into this topic and just got into the Comma Discord, have you seen anyone installing the Comma or Openpilot on a VAG car without the ACC and Lane assist?
