    Sudden Oil Loss

So something happened today. On Thursday, took the 2015 RS5 in for a 35k. Didn't drive on Friday, short local drive Saturday. Today took it for about 50 mile round trip. Coming home and getting off the highway, pulled away from the light (a little hard, but not crazy at all!)

Within seconds, car gives me big red warning "Low Oil! Turn Off Engine!" Pull off the road as soon as I can and park, a puddle of oil starts forming under the car. All on the passenger side. Oil in the wheel well/on rim and brakes. Found oil trail on the road, all on right/passenger side, nothing at the light where I was stopped that I could see.

Car did not lurch, sound different, lose power, bang, nothing.

Any ideas? It's heading back to dealership tomorrow to get them to look at it, but looking for thoughts. My first thought goes to the recent service, something not tightened/re-installed correctly......

    Thanks in advance!

The Oil lines from the front mounted oil cooler hook up to the engine just under the Alternator on the right front side of the engine. If you pull the right front inner fender liner you can follow the two Stainless braided hosed into where they bolt to the engine. My guess is an O-ring (small diameter flimsy O-rings) went bad or one of the hoses is leaking at the fitting ends. The hoses are of good quality braided stainless and PTFE (Teflon) lined but the weak point at any similar hose is where it connects to the fitting on either end. They are expensive hoses, about $260 for one and $310 for the other at discounted dealer prices. I am redoing a set for my car as one got a small leak. If you PM me your E-mail address I can take a pic of where the hoses bolt to the engine as my hoses are still off the car waiting on some Stainless braided hose.

They normally wouldn't touch those lines. If it happened soon after an oil change I'd double check the drain plug isn't loose and/or that the Oil filter housing on top is tight. If the oil filter leaks it will drain into the valley of the motor Vee and then run down the back of the engine, possibly coming off both sides. As for the drain plug, who knows where it would drip first out of the belly pan.

Thank you for the info. That line didn't seem like something they would touch in a normal service. They're pulling her apart today, I'll find out what they find. Appreciate the thoughts!

Might just be a badly timed coincidence!

Well, you were right and you were wrong. It wasn't an o-ring......

I'm an engineer and I don't know what it would take to do that to SS braided line. I assume there had to be damage to the line to allow that to happen, I plan on asking about that.

They also want $2,971 to replace this. I am also assuming they plan on replacing the whole intercooler or something, which I plan on asking about. Cost to tow home / somewhere else to replace the hose seems worth it! Screenshot_20221025-201210_Chrome.jpgScreenshot_20221025-201159_Chrome.jpg

OH wow, that is some serious damage to the hose in order to cut through the Braided line like that. Glad you got the car shutdown in a hurry, RS5 doesn't like low oil pressure. Thats either line 079-117-315-D or 079-117-316-B
https://www.buyaudivwparts.com/v-201...em--oil-cooler or if there is a Hydraulic shop that does hoses around you they can probably cut the crimps and replace the braided portion for around $100. It is Rubber coated Teflon lined hose with the Stainless steel sheating on the outside. You don't want the CPE rubber only oil lines, they're cheap, you wnat the Teflon (PTFE) lines like Audi used.

So final resolution. Although the car is out of warranty on years as a 2015, it's only 35k. My local dealership is going to "goodwill" the work and submit to Audi USA. They basically said there is no visible damage to the undercarriage, this shouldn't have happened, it's a defect. We'll cover it.

For all those bad stories you hear about "stealerships", there are some decent ones out there.

Glad to hear that horror story ends well. A bit of a coincidence though just after an oil change? Could they have been a bit careless in that shop. Are you taking it back there?

It's always possible they did something under there, made a mistake. But it would had to have been a pretty major one - if you've never worked with braided line, it takes A LOT to get one of those to fail.

I did bring it back to that Audi dealer, mainly because of what you just said....I was sure it was something they did - left a drain plug or connection not tight, something like that. They are the ones who "goodwilled" the repair to me. Maybe that is an admission of guilt, maybe it is just what they said - this is a part that never should have failed, it off warrantee on years, but not on miles, and not my first or only Audi. So they covered it. At the end of the day, that's what mattered to me.

Do you have those pine martens in your area and would they like chewing in those? Sry for my complete ignorance on both braided lines and that species eating habits.
