Carpets and door sills same for sedan and avant?

    Hi Everyone,

Im restoring a black 2000 1.8t quattro sport manual here in South Australia. There seems to be a real shortage of avants and im looking around for bits and pieces from wreckers and contemplating buying a cheap doner car.

I was wondering if the inner plastic door sill covers and carpets for a facelift are the same for sedans and avants because I cant find any others.

Also, is it possible to source new windscreen scuttle pieces?

I spose also, is there a supplier of new carpet but freight will be an issue. HAs anyone has a new carpet cut and overlocked taken from their old carpet shape but a local carpet person?

    Cheers

    Tim

I just took the interior out of an Avant, and cleaned out the interior on my Sedan. I'm almost certain the carpet is identical between Sedan and Avant. Same for the sill covers. Can't see any reason they would be different.

I would not recommend generic carpet as the factory carpet is very thick and is heavily shaped to account for the odd shape of the floor. It would be very difficult to replicate well when using a carpet of a uniform thickness.

For the windscreen scuttle pieces, I'm assuming you mean the left and right "cowl" pieces, shown on left here (these are the Left Hand Drive examples from USA Market):

Those are No Longer Available for the past 2 years or so. I think all the new ones are pretty much gone. Your best bet is to find the nicest pair you can and perhaps renew the rubber seal that touches the glass. Somebody found a generic rubber trim piece that fits these pretty well. Should be on the forums here somewhere.

There exists a Trim Kit on eBay to renew the B5 A4 wiper cowl. There are video instructions as well (example is done on a BMW E46, but process is the same):

I'm pretty certain this type of rubber trim would be available through other sources. It is not special. I still need to figure out exactly what type it is a where to source this (other than this ebay listing). I believe there is an AZ member who mentioned getting it from a parts store, but I'm still looking for that information.

EDIT: The Bimmer Kids have this figured out. Pretty easy. It's just generic "window trim" of the correct profile to slide over an edge. Might be called "y-style" or similar. Should cost like $7-10 on ebay for a 2 meter section.

Here's a guide written by said Bimmer Kids:

Hi Walky talky thanks for the reply. Thats great to hear that the carpets and the sills are the same. I had a good look at them and like you say, theres no reason they should be different. Ive found a reasonable black carpet locally so will grab that once they guys has removed it and see how it goes. The repair to the scuttles is something i was thinking of trying to do anyway so its great to hear there is a guide to save lots of stuffing around experimenting. Thanks again.

Just had a good look at the video, the write up and the ebay item. This is more than I could have possibly hoped for. Thanks for taking the time to respond and present all this info, really makes such a difference. I see if i can find something similar locally and give it a go before next winter.

    Cheers again
