I usually compare the 3 main German brands in this discussion. Mercedes, BMW and Audi.
I’ve driven all 3 brands from base models to high performance. I am responding based off of my experiences. I own a B9 S5 right now (slowly building it to see what it can do at the track), but my all time favorite car was my E60 M5.
I think Audi takes the cake when it comes to the German AWD systems. The Quattro system is reliable and balanced. The x drive system can be a lot of fun being rear wheel biased 60/40, but they don’t have a reputation for reliability.
For performance, I’ve always seen AMG to being the king of the straight line. But BMW offers a far more tasteful version of performance, even my massive v10 sedan m5 was a great time at the track. BMWs have always had a great feel for their handling and that’s why you see so many old and new BMWs at Nurburgring. I think Audi was closest to competing with BMW and Mercedes on performance when they released the B7 RS4 to compete against the W204 C63 and E9x M3 (all v8s, what an exciting time). Excluding the R8, I think Audi needs to do more to make some of their RS cars stand out to in comparison to competitors and even some of the S models.
Next is appearance which is really just opinion-based.. But I think Audi is absolutely killing it in this segment both interior and exterior and that’s why I love my Audi. I look at it and sometimes to be the sportback just looks like a little lambo sedan. I don’t think the modern BMWs are nearly as good looking as the Audis, they seem to be going through a mid life crisis with their grills, and their interiors haven’t changed much in recent times. Mercedes is another story, i think their interiors designs are the leader of the 3 brands due to their modern styling and just how sleek everything appears.
To sum it up, I’d prefer a bmw for its driving characteristics. But for performance, interior styling and exterior design I think Audi overall is killing it with their styling right now.
