Kick-to-Open Hatch Not Working

Greetings from Indiana (USA). I just purchased a slightly used 2021 RS7 from a private, non-Audi dealer. The kick-to-open hatch feature isn't working. I've followed the instructions in the owner's manual, I've watched videos on YouTube, and I had my car salesman send me a video of him using the feature on another RS7 that's for sale at his dealership. (I didn't realize it wasn't working until after I bought it and drove it home from the dealership which is 2.5 hours away from my house.) I kick my foot under the bumper and nothing happens. I took my RS7 to the local Audi dealer a few days ago to have it looked at. I had never been to that dealer, because this is my first Audi. The service department advisor who greeted me said that he's never seen an RS7 that had the kick-to-open feature, and he said that he doesn't think it even has it. I disagree with him. Ultimately, the other service department employee told me that they just don't know. They don't know if my car has it, they don't know how to fix it if it does have it. Then they told me to go ask a salesman, so I did. He said that he thinks it's "supposed" to have it. This is maddening. This is my first Audi, I spent A LOT of money on it (over six figures), and the dealership is telling me, "We don't know. Sorry bout your luck." I guess I should take it to a different Audi dealer???

Today, I decided to get under the rear bumper to look around, and I found a protruding plastic piece that I wouldn't be surprised is the sensor/module for the kick-to-open feature. Please look at the pictures I have attached. The protruding black piece of plastic, which has a hole right in the middle, had a wired module sort of sitting in it. I lifted up the wired module and saw that a piece of the black plastic was broken off and the interior of it, which is a typical-looking green microchip, appears corroded maybe from getting wet.

Anyone on here know if my car has the kick-to-open feature? And if it does, does anyone on here know if the pictures I took are the actual sensor for it? Maybe it's just broken or somehow inoperable? Thanks in advance.

Yep this RS7 has the rear kick to open feature. But slowly kick your feet beneath the bumper below the license plate and slowly move it out. Then it will trigger the hatch to open. If you just kick it like a soccer ball or too fast it won't work. Had that issue with my 21 RS7.👍

if you have the carbon diffuser it will not work.

Thank you for following up. I was able to review this with my internal resources and it would appear that this 2016 Audi RS7 (0344) wasn’t built with the hands-free rear hatch opening capability. I do apologize for any confusion. If any other questions come up – you are welcome to reach out.

The new generation C8 2021 RS7 including mines with the carbon optics does allow me to open the trunk with the feet kick.

Update - I got my problem fixed. In looking on the official Audi parts website, I located the kick-to-open module/sensor. I ordered it from the parts department of the local Audi dealership. I had them remove the broken module and install the new module today and now it works! I'm happy it was an easy fix! Thanks.

Sure hope so! I plan to check out the module underneath the car and see what the dealer says...

It wasn't covered under warranty for me. I bought the car used and because the module was physically broken, and because there's no way of knowing how it got broken, the warranty didn't cover it. The module cost me $$289 and the dealership charged $269 for labor. So, all in all, not terribly expensive. I'm glad the feature works now.

Not surprised. They never cover physical damage. At least you got it resolved.

Based upon all of my research, it appears that all come with the feature as standard. It’s not part of an option package. It’s definitely not something that’s commonly advertised by Audi!

Well, I haven't been able to get mine to work, which is why I was asking. I didn't see any 'option' to add it, but didn't know if certain packages included and certain didn't.

You have to kick pretty far in and I sweep my foot sideways a little.

Thanks! I was able to get it to work. Still not 'easy', but I think with practice, it will be second nature. Just glad to know it works!
