B5 S4 Avant hatch release button not working

Hey Everyone,

I've been rebuilding the interior of my avant and one of the final pieces left is getting the hatch release button on the driver's door to work. The button illuminates so it's getting power and I pulled the panel/door card off the hatch to look at the mechanism and I'm not seeing/hearing anything move when the button is clicked.

I went through all fuses and made sure those are good. Is there anywhere else to check before I replace the button itself?

Does the hatch pop/release from the keyfob?

My keys don't have a trunk button on them. Just lock, unlock and alarm.
