Bosch 5.7 ABS control module coding problem in A4 B6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The ABS controller in my 2004 A4 1.8T Avant recently started acting up with ABS/EPS faults and the check engine light if I drive too long above a certain speed. When these things happen, the speedometer drops out too. Next time I start the car it runs fine for a while. I have read up on all the posts with the connections inside these modules failing over time and needing to be rebuilt. Vagcom showed the problem as ABS wheel speed sensor front left (G47) open or short to plus -intermittent fault. The sensor was swapped between left and right but the problem stays on the left side. Based on all of this I am guessing the ABS module has the usual issues of broken or flaky connections inside.

So I got a used control module (Bosch 5.7 - both my original and this used one have 8E0 614 517 A embossed on them). Both the original and the used replacement say this on the barcode label at the bottom:
    ESP 012 49
    H34/S0029
    085
The rest of the numbers on the barcode are different however and perhaps they are a date code etc.

When I try to program this new unit I login using 09575 (which is correct for my car per the RossTech wiki) and coding of 04275 and a workshop code of 12345. I press Do it and the correct coding and shop number show up. Then I login using 40168 and in Basic Settings I pick Steering Angle (G85) Alignment. In alignment status it says Locked and the Go button is grayed out. If I switch to measuring blocks and look at Block 5.1, it shows -2.5 degrees and that does not change when I turn the steering wheel per the wiki.

I have tried doing all of this after clearing all fault codes and also tried it with the engine on and off and it makes no difference. When I close the ABS controller screen and go back in, the soft coding and shop number have both returned to 0 probably because the steering angle alignment did not work out. The one fault code I see come up is 00778 Steering angle sensor (G85)
    27-00 Implausible Signal

I know that with the original ABS controller I could see the steering angle change when I looked at the measuring blocks.

Would appreciate any help or advice on what to try next.

    Thanks

This post from Gytissn below helped I think:

    https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/thread...h-vcds.111996/
"If anyone has this problem I got a little tip for you. I tried recoding my module multiple times. Tried different codes almost everything. If none of the coding works for you try this. Turn on the car go to ABS module do the login and then the coding, but don't do the alignment yer and don't leave the abs module yet, do a little lap around the neighbourhood and when you return then do the steering alignment. If that doesn't work do the alignment before you go for a drive. But make sure you don't leave the BRAKE MODULE. For me the problem was that I did the login and coding, coding saves like it should be but when I did the alignment everything return to 00000.
It's quite a hassle to code these module."

However when I got back after the short drive, it still did not work though I am guessing that perhaps the short drive did help. Then I tried again exactly using the steps in the VW PDF whose link I found on the Ross-tech wiki and it did the trick for me:

    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...ics_(Bosch_5.7)
    From the above wiki:
    Special Notes
Some of the Bosch 5.7 modules will not show live Steering Angle Sensor (G85) readings after the Login and Coding are performed. If this is the case -2.5 ° may be stuck in Measuring Block 005 and will not change when the wheel is turned. Make the wheels as straight as possible and continue with the Steering Angle Sensor (G85) Calibration.
After doing the G85 Calibration, you may get a 01486 - System Function Test Active, this is normal. Please see 01486.
NAR (North American Region) market TT 45-13-01 may be helpful with coding.

When I followed the steps exactly as listed in this PDF below:
    https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...70775-3639.pdf

it finally worked and the alignment status went to okay. Strange part is I am sure I had tried these steps a few times previously and each time it would say Locked in the alignment status and the steering angle in group 5 was stuck at -2.5 degrees. This is why I think the initial drive and then this approach finally worked.

Thanks for posting the fix on this one. I just had the same thing happen in a manual swapped S6. Recoded it sans issues and now suddenly it's throwing codes again. Will give this a try and go from there.
