Surprise... There is a Shift Light in the HUD!!! 2014 S6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
OK... I learn a little something about this car nearly every time I drive it. I normally drive with the HUD/Dash in Lap Timer. I was chasing down coolant leaks and wanted to watch temps and got used to it quickly.

Was out the other day getting a little frisky with a GSXR and hoofing it really hard and noticed that there was a shift light that appeared in the HUD!!! WTF?!?!?

So, doing a little research later on and find that there is a shift light in the dash (no mention of the HUD) but only when in manual. I was not in manual... and it was in the HUD?!?

Has anyone else found that they have a shift light in the HUD?? I tried to get it to appear in the dash, but have not be able to. Lap Timer Display and Manual gets me nada!!

So what's the scoop? Did I not learn the secret handshake properly? Is there something besides the Lap Timer Screen that I have to turn on to get it to display on the dash? Why did it show up in the HUD and how do I get it back (have not seen it since).

    Cheers!!

If you turn off your hud, then it appears on the screen between the dials

I also noticed in the transmission adaptations there is a toggle for "auto upshifts", at least in my TDI with the ZF8 tyranny.

Yes, if you shut the HUD off it will appear on the dash. After I found that out, I have no desire to look down at the dash when I can see the gear, shift light and oil temps by looking out the window. I guess I can see the speed too, if I was interested.

OK... leave it to Audi to make it move BETWEEN screen depending on what you have active.

Totally makes sense, but something that you wouldn't just guess!!!

Thanks guys... but now the tough question....

Is it adjustable?? I just broke in the ECU with HPT and there is a TON of features that you hear talked about but never accessed (like 3 different maps for the exhaust flappers!!), so I would guess it is, but is it in the ECU or the TCU?!?!

    Inquiring minds want to know??

    Cheers!

You have to have the Lap Timer screen active in your Dash (the one with boost and oil temps) and I'm told you must be in manual (but I wasn't when I saw it).

There's a couple of tutorials on YT for accessing it, but you need VCDS or OBD11 at min to start the process.

    Cheers,

Did you pull a paddle to be in M momentarily? You don't have to have the shifter on the console in M to trigger the shift light.

OK... For some reason it's not active. I did find out a couple of things including 2 that have been stated incorrectly in this thread though.

1 - You WILL see the shift light in BOTH the HUD and Dash at the same time.

2 - BOTH examples I have found have been in manual, with one stating that you MUST be in manual for it to display (makes sense).

3 - BOTH examples simply activated the Lap Timer Screen and the Shift Light displayed.

4 - Is is only visible while in motion.

I did learn that you do NOT have to redline the car to see it though. Once you start moving you will see a ghost image of it that changes to green and red at RPM.

    Ghost Shift Light.jpg

My Lap Timer Screen was active when I got the car, so it might not have been a normal activation (Green Screen over VCDS/OBD11) therefore not all things were activated, or it might be a C7 vs C7.5 (not like Audi hasn't done that before!!).

I do not know what I saw in my HUD that day. It was red and flashed. There were no cars in front so it wasn't a distance warning.

Can any C7's verify that it's active on the pre car??

    Cheers!

What does the boost gauge look like? I see "boost" on one screen (lap timer I think), but I've never seen any kind of gauge that measure boost come up.

So on my 2016 A6 there is a thin red line on the dash where the shift light would be when you have the lap timer activated and you will only see it in the HUD. Click the HUD off and you will see the ghostly outline of where the shift light will appear and the thin red line goes away. Both aren't active at the same time.

No turbos and only a supercharger = no active boost gauge.

Nope... not true... this example shows it in both at the same time.

Skip[ to 5:15 if it doesn't go right too it.

    That car is a C7, not a C7.5. A 2016 is not a C7.

    From the YT video comments:

"FYI, this works in my MY16 A6 TDI, with one exception, there is no shift light in the dash display but there IS one in the HUD!

Boost gauge and oil temp is key..."

OK... you totally confused the table here.

    I have a 2014 S6... as stated in the title. Pretty sure that's a C7.

I am seeing a Boost and Oil Temp gauge on the Lap Timer Dash and no Shift Light in either the HUD or Dash.

So what were you trying to say here?

    1. Not all systems are the same. The 2012 A6 which was done before the 2013 S6 doesn't have a track mode because the feature didn't exist yet.

    2. Not everybody has a HUD. I guess you need an S6/7, an RS6/7 or you need a fully optioned out A6/7.

    3. The car in the video you posted is a C7 A6 which covers 2011-2015.

    4. The C7.5 is the 2016 (and I think some 2015) to 2018 which doesn't have the same MMI and controls as the older ones. Features are now present that weren't before and some other things are probably gone.

So if someone with a 2016 (me) saw the video you linked to and has a HUD, they will go crazy trying to get it to work, unless there is a hidden VCDS feature I didn't find. So you can't really blanket statement the situation and because you have an S6, that probably even makes more of a difference. You'll notice in the video that there is an ECU tune, but the redline stayed the same. So the C7 Owner ;), doesn't have a useful shift light because it follows the factory setting of 6200-6300, when the new redline is 7400. I have a tune from APR on my 2016 and instantly the redline is only the last 3 LEDs like in my sig. The shift light barely lit the first 1-2 segments because the TCU was not modified but the redline was. Now with a Berk TCU tune, everything lines up. There are MANY people with A6 C7 ECU tunes that the redline is still showing factory limits. There are many people with no HUD in their A6.

So in my car, with the HUD on, there is no indicator on the dash when the HUD is on and there is just a thin line in it's place. Click the HUD off and there it is. I think I have to be moving for the shift light to appear on the dash but it does.

At least for the 2014 S6, the HUD was an option (I believe part of a package), not a standard feature.
