Broken Bolt while Installing 034 Trans Mount Insert

    Hey guys,

I broke one of the 10mm triple square bolts while installing my 034 Transmission Mount Insert today. That said, One bolt is intact and the mount seems stable. In order to fix the issue, I see three possibilities and would like recommendations:

    (1) ignore it given I have one bolt fully intact and torqued;

    (2) drill the heck out of the hold bolt, hoping I can do so without ruining the thread and can insert a new bolt (which I have); or,

    (3) attempt to use one of those bits that backs out broken bolts.

I supposed a 4th option would be a blob of JB weld, but these seems like the worst possible scenario.

    do not drill

if you muck it up, its worse than a stuck bolt.

talk to your local dealer/shop, they are super experienced in this so in the event you need to pay for the proper knowledge and experience with this.

this is a DIY project, but I wouldnt attempt it on your first go at trying to back out a broken bolt

What was the cause for the bolt to break; rusted or potentially wrenched on at an angle?

Great suggestion by Carpenter to call the dealer, if they are willing to give you the info. I would personally start by soaking it with liquid wrench (if rusted) or similar product, then utilize an extractor bit (#3)

Thanks guys. It seem as if it was coming out on angle. It was easy to break free, then i had to work it to start removing. It's probably 1/2 backed out. The other one broke free and came out in about 30 seconds. No air tools. No power tools. Just a 10MM triple square on 3/8 ratchet.

I have no specifics on the bolts you are experiencing this with, but I learned that most of Audi's bolts are single use, torque to yield. Even the seriously low torque valley bolts under the oil separator are one time use and they are in inch/lbs.......

Very good high speed, metal bit. Small diameter. Carefully, slowly center drill it. Reverse bit once it can grab. Or, take it to somebody you trust with that kind of work. It is tricky. I screwed up a few doing it.

It looks like the transmission mount bolts to the transmission support that bolts to the transmission. If I understand correctly its 1 of those 2 bolts that goes through the stop plate (item 3). Worst case you can pick up the trans support (item 8) used for under $100. It looks like those are the only 2 bolts in this picture that are recommended to replace. I can say for a fact that I have had those bolts out a few times and never replaced them and have never broke them. Audi techs will replace the bolts that say ALWAYS REPLACE for warranty reasons but they don't actually need to be replaced each time.

I ended up using one perfect bolt and connected it. Then, for the other, it's threaded half out almost like a dowel rod. finished rear-end install and beat the piss out of the car. The trans mount has not moved. Talked to to a mechanic about the issue; he said to leave it alone based on the 034 design. With one bolt fully seated and the 034 insert sitting flush with one bolt acting almost as a dowel he said the whole mount cannot move since it fits within a female design, which is wrapped around a solid male insert. .

All the said, he aske me to beat the piss out of the car to see if anything change. If so, he'd tap the bad side, keep the good side intact and take my money for 1 to 2 hours labor to get everything square. But, he said he'd rather take that same money and put it toward something useful I can not do on may garage floor.

I'm running 100 miles tomorrow and will be able to beat trans. So, I'll know by Easter dinner if I need to have the thing re tapped.

034 Rear end gear installed perfectly. And, from what I can tell, I'm getting exactly what my $263 was intended to provide --- super tight shifts and a rear end that seems even more glued to the pavement (still on winter rubber at about 40-50*F).

I'll update next week. Either way, I have simple resolution.

    Thanks for the comments guys!

I'm on to fluids ( diffs, trans axle, maybe trans on both my A6 and my wife'sQ7 over next couple weeks) . The instructrutable Civic might need oil, coolant, trans fluid and brakes. Then we'll ignore it for another 4 years. it has 100K warranty!!

I broke a bolt in the engine block of my 911 while changing over idler pullies. I carefully drilled it out and used a bolt extractor. It was a little tense for a bit but it came out with no issue and I replaced to bolt.
