Anyone know the weight of the the OEM hood?

As I see we don’t have too many options on hoods. But curious if the weight difference as I see a CF hood of approx 15lbs.

I like the look but not for 2k lol

It's steel, it's heavy. Part number is 8W0823029A if you can find a seller with a weight value.

I’d love to know this as well. I purchased a CF hood after an unfortunate hit and run but recycled the hood before I thought to get a weight…ugh

You need a hobby or something…

It’s roughly 56lbs. Seems to be the common shipping weight.

Are you sure about that? The CF hood I found is 36lb and I am pretty sure our full steel hood is definitely closer to or over 100lbs it is quite hefty.

Pulled the hood off myself and I really don’t think it was 100lbs. Also my hood is ~13lbs, where you getting a 36lb CF hood lol?

It's pretty well reinforced frame underneath the carbon.

Gotcha the one I'm going for has functional venting and some metal frame underneath. I was hoping it saved more than only 20lbs though. Not sure it's worth the $ for only 20lbs.

43lbs would be nicer but also pricier for a very plain design.

I’ve got venting without any extra framing. It’s worth contacting kt4 if you’re looking for something custom and light. Nice folks to work with.

Since we have a shop we can get them significantly cheaper than 2k. We got them for 1200 and some change shipped freight. They're made to order since the B9 platform isn't as popular as the BMW M cars or GTRs for example so it does take about 2 months for deliver, US company.

Weight of OEM hood is ~52lbs
    CF hood is ~14-16lbs

any risk not using hood pnis? seems like all sellers recommend to use one but I hate the look. Also how much weight would painting it add? I'd prefer a stock+ look but still want that weight saving and air vents

Most installers will require hood pins especially on the really light ones.... even the heavier metal braced one I found it's recommended.

Flush mount ones look great IMO

Do the people running these hoods not worry about water ingress?

What is the water going to hurt, every electrical connected is weatherproof.

Shouldn't be an issue, the engine bay isn't really considered a dry area of the car, you can wash in there minus areas you shouldn't pressure wash (i.e. don't blast the ECU, harnesses, etc...)

Some cars even have factory vents, like my C8 corvette has huge vents that rain into the engine bay. Annoying to clean up since it gets all over the glass engine cover though, always have to pop it open and clean up in there after a wash.

Right but that doesn’t mean I want the inner V pooling with water when we have heavy downpour lol.

I’m pretty sure OEM hood is aluminium not steel.

Have you ever opened your hood? It’s definitely not aluminum.

The hood is definitely steel. Which is kind of surprising. Even my S550 Mustang has an aluminum hood which is much lighter.

If you want a factory aluminum hood on this platform it needs to be a Q5/SQ5.

Is there an engineering reason for the heavier hood? To add weight so the car is more stable on the road? Road feel?

If there's a design intent for steel over aluminum beyond just cost, it's most likely to do with crash testing.

Exactly. A steel hood has a higher tensile strength and ductility compared to aluminum. it "absorbs" or manages energy more predictably (compared to aluminum) so it makes for a better "crumple zone" material.
