    Denver Emissions

    I just moved here and have a B8.5 S4 w/ 034 TCU and ECU tunes…

I need to register my car, which seems like a huge PIA, and I’m wondering if I need to flash my ECU or if I will pass with the tune…

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this.

If you have your stock cats, I would guess you'd be fine, but you just never know lol. I have a B8 S4 with dual pulley 034 tune, but I've never done emissions on it since I register in an exempt county. It's always safest best to tune back to stock. If you don't have a flash cable, Berg Performance is the local 034 tuning shop, and a fantastic shop all around.

Awesome!! Thank you!! The local 034 shop was going to be my 2nd question!

I do have the stock cats and it passed in CA last year. I’ll try it as it first and then flash it if I have to.

    Cheers

If it passed in CA, it will likely pass here.

Based on this thread it seems that CO has followed suit with California in checking the ECU for tunes. Has anyone else run into this yet? I can find no announcements, info, anything that states CO has implemented the ECU checks here in CO quite yet.

My 911 passed this summer without issue with a tune. Granted it has cats and all the readiness monitors are set/intact etc.

I just passed emissions last week with no issues. Flashed the ECU back to Integrated Engineering's stock file and drove for a few miles to set readiness

That's good to hear. I wish it were that simple for me but I'm in pretty deep on my car and a simple flash back to stock won't work in my case

you just need your cats and all the readiness monitors are set/intact etc, even with stage one tunes they will code secondary checks out and to pass they have to be able to read now for emissions
My GTI had to get a new file last year due to that's when the change came, my S4 is next year to run emissions so will see as im DP stage 2 plus >.< but still stock cats

That's not true anymore. You need the check sums and CVN's to match what the factory stock tune says they should be. Most tuners are changing both of those, so if you roll in with a tune, even though you have cats and all the monitors are set, you're still going to fail.

Bumping an old thread to see if anyone has had any issues passing with a tuned ECU recently. I just finished rebuilding my B7 S4 and knew it wouldn’t pass due to being cat-less (tuned as well) so I registered in GJ at my nephews’ address. But my B8 is due for emissions and has a stage 1 tune so I’m wondering if I should do the same as the B7. It was pretty effortless to register in Mesa County honestly, but just looking for anyone who has recent experience with these emission changes.

Well here are...welcome to CA, I mean CO.

I am at my wit's end with this! Failed two emission tests because of evap readiness. It has been quite a show up to this point. Passed with a tune during COIVD as they were not checking software tuning then. Now they are...so failed my latest emissions test (as they run tamper software now). Flashed back to stock and drove a while (per IE). Made my appt in Greely and failed that due to evap readiness. Dfove longer and still no go. Car sat at Audi for two days and they couldn't figure why it's not flipping. Took it to Berg Perf in Denver (awesome dudes BTW) and had them flash to a clean stock file for me. Drove around more and still no go. They called and stated they figured a way to force the test to run to get to ready (success on another b8 s4) and they were able to pass emissions test. Figured I would drive around more and see what happens...nope, still no go. Went back to Berg and had them try it and they could not force the test for some reason.

I am tired of chasing this...It has been 2k miles since I failed my first inspection and I am running all over the place with this thing to get evap to flip. All because someone at the state level thought it would make a diff. My car has passed emissions with a tune on it before...why not now!! Anyone have this issue and figure out how to force test the evap????

CO emissions is a huge pain now. Always was about as bad as Cali but now we are basically just as bad. Any CEL will fail you no matter what it is for. All readiness codes must be set to ready. No tampering or tunes detected. Gas cap integrity must be up to par. Smoke test must be passed with catalytic converters intact.

It's all bullshit IMO. If you pass the smoke test, which is that actual sniffer test/exhaust test, they shouldn't care about your CEL or anything else. It is an EMISSIONS test! If the car is emitting within the acceptable range it should pass IMO. They make it such a pain in the ass now.....

Yeah, the big change is that you can't show any ECU tampering or tunes. All of the others constraints have existed before, but adjusting tunes was the easiest way to get around them.

Do you mind sharing what mods you had and if you removed the tune (if so which one)?
