    SRM carrier bearing installation

    Attachment 268139

I could have sworn when I dropped the carrier bearing off at the shop it had a bright yellow polyurethane bushing with it, and I am pretty sure the installation process includes cutting that old one off. At no point did theuy say "oh hey, we just threw that fancy ass poly bushing you gave us in the trash and used the old one, cool?" But hey, at least they put the housing on there, right? I can't wait to hear the tapdancing about this one. Suffice it to say I'd like to request all my money back for this half-ass, deceitful installation, and I'm 100% sure I'm not getting it. This was a while back and I just trusted the shop, so I didn't check it until now.

They clearly knew you would complain about increased NVH, so took extra time to punch out the poly bushing and keep the original! Be happy, now you have an easily removable bracket. Seriously, this is bizarre. I think SRM website has video instructions for installation; if a shop is unfamiliar with an aftermarket but accepts the installation job, they should be responsible to learn how to do it correctly. If the shop is unsure, they should turn the job down. You should not have to double check everything, but since you did not and apparently much time has passed, you may be stuck. Hopefully they'll fully refund or at least waive labor and make it right if you provide another kit.

I hate to tell you this, but that is not the stock bushing. You can tell the bushing is aftermarket because it is split. The factory bushing is not a split bushing and it is drastically thinner.

Some of the SRM bushings are black. Perhaps you are mis-remembering that it was yellow. Whatever the case, that is clearly not a stock bushing in your picture.

well I'm glad you told me this q, for sure, because I usually am the a-hole and it seems to be the case yet again, but I definitely had a yellow one. Maybe they had a black one in stock? Why would they swap, maybe the black ones are softer? Jesus now I have to send an apology email!

The SRM website shows only a yellow color, and that's the color of the bushing when I bought mine about two years ago (the bushing on the installation video is red). JXB bushings are black on that website. Regardless, I was looking at the shape; it did not seem to be the flat bushing that SRM ships. Unfortunately the picture is gone.

Got it but still some mystery. This video was posted last year, but no mention of when the carrier was purchased. My carrier is glossy silver in color with the yellow bushing (as shown on SRM website), this one is flat black. In all cases the bushing sidewall is flat and flush with the carrier. My memory is that the picture OP posted shows the bushing bulging out from the carrier body. Fortunately you are more observant of what's important: whatever bushing it was, it was not the OEM bushing.

original picture - part of my confusion was I wasn't expecting to see the metal ring, because I thought that got cut off during installation but apparently not.

I believe the ring you see is the outside race of the bearing. The stock bushing is attached to the bearing and is removed and the new bushing goes in its place, along with the carrier as well.

I don't know what to say. My metal carrier is aluminum and embossed with the word "front" on (obviously) the front side, just as in the picture on the SRM website. Installed and looking from the front, the yellow bushing is all that is visible inside the aluminium carrier and it sits flush with the carrier. In your picture, the black bushing seems to not be flush with the carrier, though as qcrazy points out it appears split. Maybe it's different on the back side?

It was definitely yellow when I dropped it off, lol - and after watching that video for the 16th time I'm still confused by what I have going on, but whatever. If I can get it working I'll stick my new china endoscope up there and look some more.

Better picture from the front, and a few from the rear. I feel like the yellow one that was full polyurethane would've held up better. I wonder why I didn't get my yellow bushing back...I must have agreed to it somehow. I'd like to investigate more...but I re-read the email I sent, and there's no going back there for me now! I'm not a nice person.
