Maximum Engine Speed 6,000 RPM Warning

I just received the attached alert (with EPC light) when driving around in a parking lot at slow speeds. I turned the car off and then turned it back on and the alert went away. 44 degrees F outside. I drove maybe 8 miles since I started the car, maybe topping out at 50 MPH in suburban traffic. I have yet to pull the codes, but I wondered if anyone has seen this before. The car has not chipped. Thanks for any ideas!

Pull the codes. The computer is unhappy about something. It's all pointless speculation without a code.

    Agreed.

It is weird though to be such a high warning...it is only worried about that last 400rpm? Strange

Will do. Just need a chance to do it and wondered if people had seen.

Bored at work and googled it. Found on an R8 forum that it might be fuel related. You might have tripped a P0087 code.

Some tunes raise a lot of rev limits and sometimes a few limp ones go up too. There are dozens of them.

Yeah. Mine is stock and it wasn’t running high. Strange to see a simultaneous high and low reading.

If I'm reading the time stamps correctly, the codes are about a minute apart. The knowledgeable folk will have more sophisticated ideas, but I would wonder about a bad tank of gas. Has it recurred?

I only use Top Tier 93 from Costco, so it should be good gas, but maybe there indeed was some type of blockage. Hmm.

Possible HPFP on it’s way out. If the solenoid gets sticky it can cause these conditions.

Hope we won’t have to replace the fuel pump (had to on my C6, and it still wasn’t quite right later). If only this showed up a couple weeks ago when it was under warranty. Maybe the dealer will work with me if that’s the problem.

Does a bad HPFP have its own specific code, or is the problem inferred from the fuel pressure codes?

    Inferred from fuel pressure codes.

    Based on codes.

Drivers side (Bank 2) fuel pump solenoid is failing (you can only buy the whole pump).

If you have a good set of triple squares and some wrenches you can swap the pump in about 10 min.

I have also cleaned the pump when this issue popped up with success. It’s kinda 50/50 shot, but can save you $600ish with tax for a new OEM pump.

If even a small piece of dirt gets in the pump it can cause these issues. That is a much more involved job, and akin to swapping pump internals, and having a solid understanding of pump operation, as well as a bit of mechanical know how, on how to energize the solenoid while the pump is out of the car.

Most likely this is not fuel related, but just an FYI. I am seeing more and more posts on my various car forums about starting, operating, and idle issues. Almost all of these are being traced to bad gas and these are all people using top tier fuels with high octane ratings. There seems to be some sort of fuel supply issue taking place around the country, so give that some thought. I had issues with my S6 and my Z06. Both fueled at same station. Ran sea foam cleaner through both and changed up stations. So far, so good.
