I remember seeing a paid option on the window sticker of a Panamera for matrix provisioning (supposedly with the hope that it would become legal sometime soon after). That had to be 6+ years ago now. But it at least shows that they (at one point) were onboard with enabling it on old cars.

What years were they? It was fairly difficult on my 2018 M3 (with the icon lights) vs the earlier cars, and then it was found out the US icon lights do not have the full matrix hardware. Mind did do the matrix dance with the coding enabled, but it didn't work very well. Was definitely let down after reading how easy it was on the earlier cars.

I would suggest people call Audi of America - something I did this morning.

A 2015 M4 and a 2019 M4cs. The M4cs had the icon headlights. The coding was no more difficult on my 2019 than it was on my 2015. However, US specced cars had different hardware inside the headlight units with missing circuitry and missing the NGHB section of the LED arrays, so even if coded, it did not function properly. The Canadian specced cars had all the LED arrays and circuitry, but with slightly different lenses than the EU cars, but the VLD and NGHB still functioned properly. There's a whole thread on this on Bimmerpost.

IDK if my 2015 M4 functioned perfectly, but the lights definitely tunneled around cars, and shut sections of the lights off correctly when driving with the adaptive high beams enabled. It was awesome to watch it work.

Yes, the pre-LCI LED headlight hardware was the same between North American and EU/ROW cars. That however changed with the LCI "icon" LED headlights.

At least they had a response ready for it...me thinks they are already yapping about it internally. I could live with paying a reasonable fee for turning this feature on...but if the hardware is all there and this is simply a software enablement thing...charging would be a bad look, IMHO.

Yep, I fully followed that thread at the time. Was one of the first to use the new cheat codes for the icon lights before we knew the hardware was different. Still left it enabled. It worked somewhat - I just turned if off when I saw it start blinding people. Was unfortunate, was really looking forward to having it.

It's amazing in the RS6 now though.

I think you can count on Audi charging to enable the feature. I participate in the Audi Driver’s Circle and one of the surveys was all about paying per year to enable features on the car. As in “how much would you pay for heated seats” etc. Audi is not the only one looking at this model. I prefer to pay upfront and have the feature permanently.

Recurring revenue model. Literally the worst possible scenario for consumers.

Based on their online services so far it would be a total disaster. Have to say that their apps are a real weak spot. And expensive. “Hey my heated steering wheel doesn’t work.” “Your subscription expired. Press 1 to renew, press 2 to cancel, press 3 if you would like to add additional services.” Presses 1. “We are experiencing system difficulties. Please call back at a later time.”

LOL no kidding. I can never reach the MarketPlace in the app...maybe once out of 100 times it'll actually work. Try to view subscription with the easy button? Same deal. I have to navigate around through past orders. Changes? App tells me I have to cancel my current subscription to change and I need to call to do so since the app doesn't allow me to manage my existing subscription.

Some days the app tells me I need to complete setup (I never click the button, the setup is complete). Some days it doesn't. Some days the app tells me I need to sign-in to link all services to vehicle (again, already done). Some days it doesn't. Cryptic errors on refresh are common. The car status doesn't refresh if the car has been sitting for longer than about 12 hours (guessing this is actually by design to preserver battery).

It is good the app is basically useless else if it was an important part of owning/using the car, holy hell.

I read today that the US approval of the adaptive driving beams comes with a caveat. The brightness may have to be reduced to meet the '70s vintage SAE standard. That defeats much of the purpose as I see it. Not certain how Audi will respond but they have said they want to bring this to customers as soon as they can. We might still need a hack to make the lights properly bright if Audi enables ADB and meets the brightness standard with software changes.

What you read is incorrect. NHTSA is actually doing the exact opposite and not fully applying all portions of the SAE recommend practice, which is J3069 and was 1st published in June 2016 and last updated in March 2021. In Europe ADB must receive type approval against ECE R123. The other major standard is J3069. NHTSA consider both but didn't fully implement either due to: R123 not being an objective test, and J3069 for not adequately addressing glare among other things. In October 2018 NHTSA published a Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) and since then has received comments from a variety of intrested parties including VW Group. Heck even the drive-in theater owners had a say. So, VW Group has been part of the process at least since the NPRM. Now NHTSA has issued the final rule and the amended section 108. Just because the final rule allows ADB does not mean any manufacturer can just turn them on. They still need to be certified against the amended 108. Now, since VW Group has been using these lights in Europe for some time I suppose they are approved to R123. Since amended 108 is not R123 there is a chance that they won't meet the requirements. But remember, VW Group has been part of this process so im fairly certain the contents of the final rule are no surprise. Hopefully the certification process goes fast, they get certified and you guys get your lights enabled.

At least one dealership flagged this ask to AoA. No idea what result will be. But I’m surprised it has to be said that you shouldn’t be asking your dealership to update your car with stolen code that provides functionality currently illegal In the US.

If you are too cheap to pay Sam to have this done, don’t do it. But don’t ruin it for everyone else. AoA could theoretically look for this code and shut it down.

This is not his code at all, but the code owned by the VW Group
These settings are found in the official service programs, ODIS Service and ODIS-Engineering

In conclusion, he uses the ODIS coding and program, which is owned by the VW Group, without authorization

Not all RS6s have this feature turned on from factory. Seems like the early 21s did and at some point Audi disabled it. My RS6 was built Jan 21 and this feature is disabled in mine.

I honestly didn't even check before Sam did the "package" of coding. It may have been there but it obviously was there afterwards.

    This is pretty weird.
