I just had Sam flash the matrix lights on my car last night (as well as remove component protection from/calibrate my night vision system, which I retrofitted in). I will post videos and explain more later today, but figured I would just clarify some things now.

Yes you have to source the VAS5054a yourself (although Sam can connect you with someone you can rent it from). You are not purchasing the coding instructions from him per se. In that case only one person would have to purchase the instructions and then distribute them, honesty notwithstanding.
What you are paying Sam for is the know-how and labor (as far as I know, nobody else is offering to provide this service remotely). You just give him remote access to your computer, plug the cable in, and watch. He downloads and installs the necessary software onto your computer (which takes time itself given it's a large download) and performs the flash. It is not an extremely straightforward process, and I like the idea that someone who really knows what they are doing is doing it (and Sam definitely does - the night vision coding he did for me was not easy).

So Sam still has to spend time scheduling with each person, installing the software on each person's computer, and flashing each car. How he wants to work out a possible discount considering that is up to him. But it's not as easy from a time/labor standpoint for him as it might seem. He's probably willing to discount multiple cars in the same location at the same time because he then only has to set up one computer and can knock out all the cars in one block of time.

I'll ask him what he can do.

What is your impression of the working matrix lights?

I'll post more of an explanation tonight when I pull the video from my dash cam showing them working, but I am very happy to finally have it enabled given I live in a very rural area right now.
I had matrix lights enabled on my F80 M3 and desperately missed having them.

Sam responded and said if we did a group by they could do 650 per flash.

I really want to do this, but my worry is that either an OTA or dealer-installed software update will overwrite it. I had that happen with a BMW on which I had enabled the matrix function (BMW call it anti-dazzle) and I was back to square one and had to pay someone a second time to recode it. For that reason and given the amount that Sam charges, I am hesitating.

I have had my RS6, my first Audi, since the end of February, so I have no feel for how often Audi does software updates.

I’m in for this as well. Any idea if it matters that I’m in Canada? My good friend is my master tech at an Audi dealership and said I can use his PC, scan tools and cables

Anyone found a video of the instructions for this and/or the difference between matrix or not matrix?

As promised, here's a video I pulled from my dash cam and my experience with Sam.

Right now, I do not believe there's any other option to enable this without going through him (I believe Pacific German is using him as well).
Apparently the firmware file to enable matrix functionality was difficult for him to obtain. This isn't just a change a few things with vag com process.
Sam installs a virtual computer onto your computer which has the necessary software (download is ~40gb). You need to buy or borrow a VAS5054a cable.
The actual flashing process doesn't take very long. I believe around 20min (Sam did a couple other things for me which took much longer, but the matrix part of it was pretty quick).

As I stated earlier, the price he's charging may seem high, but you're paying him for his time and the ability to do this right now. Currently, this isn't something you can do yourself and there are no "instructions" on how to do it.
He needs to schedule time with each person separately, take the time to download and set up the software on your computer (takes a bit of time because of the size of the download), and then likely schedule another time to actually perform the flashing process on your car.

As for the functionality of the matrix lights: this is absolutely how the car should've come stock, and it's apparent it was meant to come this way. I've found the low beams pretty lackluster on dark roads, but the high beams are pretty decent. Without matrix, you are stuck with all or nothing high beams, so if there's any amount of traffic around you are left without them. In reality, our high beams are actually a matrix of light beams that the car can selectively enable/disable. With matrix lights enabled, the car basically leaves the high beams on all the time and selectively turns off the beams where another car is present. I haven't had much time to see it in action so far, but first impression is very positive. Time will tell how well it actually works/if I ever get high beamed, but so far so good.

    Photos/videos:

Calibration process showing how the car can project the high beams into pretty narrow beams

    New high beam animation

Driving on a dark road (I manually turn off the high beams at the 8sec mark so you can see the difference having matrix enabled makes)

the 5054a is the cable. There's nothing else to it

You don't need to worry about software either as Sam takes care of that

We've done a bunch so far (three this week, three scheduled for next week)

Let me know! Saves the local guys the hassle of downloading a huge file, setting up the battery maintainer, buying the VAS clone tool, etc. We use the genuine tool at our shop so there is no risk of failure.

Stupid DOT regs since emergency vehicles have blue lights and passenger vehicles are not permitted to have blue lights. Agree it’s silly. Not like EU countries don’t have emergency vehicles with blue lights

I can see these being super helpful on a 1-2 lane road but how is it on a freeway in an urban or suburban environment? How many cars can the matrix headlights shield simultaneously?

Will be interested in doing this once I get my car. My M4 had the Euro Anti-Dazzle coding on it and it was really wild to watch the car move the lights around at night with oncoming traffic and such.

That said, $700 for coding is laughable. I think I paid someone $100 and they coded like 15 things on my M4. Audi tuners need to get their shit together.

Off-topic sorta, but does this mean A6 guys can somehow enable RS tail light animation without actually having the HD Matrix variant?
