Maybe but maybe not. What I'm reading is that Audi was concerned that a car might accelerate in an unintended fashion and try to run over a pedestrian. Therefore, a passive system was developed that would set off a pyrotechnic charge that would in turn extend pistons on either side of the hood and move it backward and upward a little bit, so as to move the hood away from the pedestrian. I saw a self study manual for the 2013 A3 that mentions this system, but I can't find a mention of it in the 2014 S6 manuals I downloaded from erWin (certainly could have missed it). Maybe the 2012 A6 does not have this feature, but when OP had work done on the car, some new component was added that is looking for this non-existent part. As gk1 wrote in post #2, it makes sense that such a system would be tied into the general occupant safety system. Hopefully smarter AZ members know about this and can help OP.
