Front Filler Plate Run

Good morning guys and gals! I've been working to reverse engineer the front-filler plate that is NLA as I need one, and seems like others do as well. Happy to report that the scans are done and I have a file made to get these produced.

I'm still working through which method (print or mold) will make a better part and be more cost effective, but hoping to have those answers within the next few weeks.
The plates will be made with a smooth complete fill, no license plate holes and are representative of the 8D0 807 977 part that's NLA.

A number plate backing plate! I would build a 3d file on the TB casting for RS4's.
IMHO, that is.
I'd personally make a wood form and then make fibreglass or carbon fibre copies, if the need was there for them.

I took this idea to a local injection molding specialist and it was around 2,000 units to make it make sense. He recommended the fiberglass/carbon fiber route as well. I hope you have better results - add me to the list of interested folks.

Yeah I don’t want to gouge anyone but I fear that with an order size of about 100, printing will be the most economical route over molding with a higher lot size, and therefore a little more costly.

Update for everyone:

Was able to find a capable company that can produce a small batch of these. For those that care, they have their ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certifications, so you can know the parts will be coming from a reputable place.

I had the OEM plate tested to determine where its mechanical property values were, so that going forward, I could choose a material with similar properties so that these plates will have a very close to OEM-feel. I had thought to have them primed and painted, but it makes better sense to sell the blanks, so that you could go to a shop and have them match with your front bumper so it's as close as possible.

Pricing will be $200 + shipping.

I'll post another update once I've received the first part and can start taking orders. Thanks guys.

Yikes... $200 + shipping... But then again, that's how it all works when it comes to production of small batches of product. And you can't order like 10,000 units because they may never sell out and you're stuck with them.

Yeah I wish there were more cars to put these on but that's the nature of a small order. From what I read online from websites that used to sell the OEM plates, $200 isn't far off their original MSRP.

That's true, $200 is not bad, but after seeing these things go for $50 - $70 on eBay, it becomes a hard price to swallow again. Depending on the quality of the product, $200 is very doable as well, especially if they come pre-painted/primed. My opinion, I'd rather prime them than paint them. You can offer to paint it at an extra price, but expect bargain vultures to nickel and dime you. Primer is cheaper than paint.

I understand where you're coming from. I have not checked out what's on Ebay to be completely honestly, but Ebay is Ebay after all haha.

Including the ISO certs that this company has seemed important to help give an idea of their capabilities. Those certifications are pretty rigorous to get and maintain, so I am expecting a well-made product from them.

Still sorting through priming. I definitely won't have them painted as it makes better sense to have each one matched with the front of each car at a shop so there isn't obvious contrast.

They don’t sell for $80 on eBay fully intact, complete tabs, without holes. The cleanest ones are on par with this piece. I know this because I’ve bought multiple units, as spares.

Happy Sunday guys, wanted to update that the first article FRONT FILLER PLATE arrived today and I have to say I'm extremely happy with the results!

Please see the photos below to get a comparison against the OEM plate (silver/black). The tabs line up great and the plate has slightly more flex which is what I wanted to go for so the tabs would be a bit more robust. In case you notice any swirling, that texture is on the inside of the plate and the front side that will be facing outward is completely smooth.

There's a video showing the plate installed in a bumper so you can see the end result as well.

I will get them primed so you only need to have them painted (which I think is best so the paint match is as close to your individual car as possible).

I'll be taking orders for these today so I can have the shop start molding. PRICE FOR THE PRIMED PLATE WILL BE $200 + SHIPPING. PLEASE EMAIL [email protected] so that I send you a PayPal request through there.

Really cool project, awesome to see it come to life. Now, if you partnered with a body shop to spray these silver and black in mass, you could make a killing (and obviously charge more!)

I’m sure a lot of people feel if they have to paint it, they might as well just repair the one they have.
