Never done it on a A4 but on a Q5 with the timing job, if you do it by the factory procedure, you will put the car in service position and dump the coolant; and it makes doing the pump a 15 minute add on job. This is exactly what I did. Did my timing and got a water pump (there was nothing wrong with mine) for only the cost of the part.
