SQ5 RedStar Cat Pipes Sound Clips

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So fair warning, I am not a cinematographer by any stretch of the imagination, but a handful of people have been asking for some sound clips so tried to put a little something together anyway. I tried getting some from inside the car as well, but they didn't come out well so maybe I will try again some other time.

    Exhaust Setup:

    RedStar Heat Shielded Cat Pipes
    CTS Turbo Downpipes
Vibrant Ultraquiet Resonators added to downpipes
    AWE Touring Catback

    Hope this helps.

This exhaust combo sounds really good.
That thing means business with the whine and launch sounds.

Fantastic video! I appreciate that you have included the other cars in the shot to compare the sound. Your exhaust is pretty mild and more raw when you are WOT. Would you be able to post pics of how your Vibrant resonators are mounted on your downpipes?

I tried to get some but the set-up I have just wasn't getting a good recording and then with the windows down it was all wind noise so I will have to figure something else out, but not right now unfortunately.

Here is what we did. V-Bands added in and chopped out the straight pipe section to replace them. They are bigger but are basically in the same section of pipe that the stock resonators are.

The nice part was this allowed us to rotate them to get everything to fit nicely and then just clamp it down.IMG_20210322_130221.jpg

Did you put them in yourself? It seems like the Q5 has more space in the trans tunnel than the B8 S4s.

We did, I posted here not too long ago about some tips for the job, it is still a big pain, especially the drives side even with the additional room. We did it on a lift in about 3 hours. We didn't touch the trans at all. I'd plan on twice that if you do it on the ground. We also were doing motor mounts so lowered the subframe as well, this helped a lot with getting the drivers side out. Not sure how easy or possible it would have been without doing that, or getting creative with a sawzall. Factory manual says that one should come out from the top, but there was no way I was taking all of that crap out.

Sounds glorious! Any trouble with passing emissions in PA with the Redstar HFCs?

They absolutely sound amazing and they will pass emissions in PA and anywhere else that does the OBD2 emissions readiness test. Unfortunately if you plan to ever make any power on this platform these cats still have the potential to fail. The OP now runs test pipes and I run a gutted set of Redstar Cats on a test pipe file. His set up went first and that prompted me to get mine pulled and sure enough mine were failing as well. That being said I don't know where the line is for making too much power for these. Both of our Qs are high 10 second rigs so we are definitely pushing things a little harder then most. While they were healthy they were the best sounding exhausts I had ever heard on a V6. I still miss it LOL !

So how are you passing emissions with the test pipes? Spacers?

I want to go dual pulley but everyone says it melts the cats. I don't want to spend $2500 on the Redstar HFCs if they will eventually fail too. Mine is a daily driver and my only car, so I need it to pass.

Yeah, unfortunately the RedStar Cats are not bullet proof. When my emissions are due I will flash back to the regular dual pulley file and add spacers in and drive it for however long it takes to set readines . With Torque Pro I can monitor emissions readiness and see when everything is set and ready to pass. In MD we test every 2 years. 034 instructs us not to run spacers on the test pipe file so they will only get installed for a short period of time and then come back off.

I ended up installing an 034 179mm lower pulley to add to an APR 57.75 upper pulley. From my research, this seems to be a more conservative setup. I will probably do the Redstar HFCs at some point in the near future.

As I didn't want to Open a new topic, I will just ask here: What are the best options for high flow cated pipes. Is JHM an option ? Is it possible to remove the stock Cats without lowering the engine/gearbox ? I am asking this just to have some info. Next week I will know for sure how my cats look like from the inside.

JHM is a option if you want something that is turn key. I have also seen Garage Auto sports recently advertise that they offer a catted downpipe (not catted test pipe) solution with a option for GESI 300 cell cats. I'm not sure which cats JHM uses, I have never seen that advertised. If having something welded up is a option then CTS downpipes to 2 GESI cats followed be 2 Vibrant Ultra Quiets is a solid solution as well. FYI the GESI Non EPA 300 cell cats are only 200.00 ea because they aren't loaded with as much precious metals but are just as strong as the 700ea EPA units with slightly more smell to the exhaust.

Fortunately for us there is more room on a SQ5/Q5 then there is on a S4 because of the shape of the ZF8 vs the DSG. Others have gotten theirs out without dropping the subframe or jacking the trans over. If you don't mind cutting the discharge pipe on the cat that will make your life easier. I have even seen people on the FB B8 S4 page remove their false fire wall and gain even more access to work some of the bolts from up top.

We remove the transmission every time (it's quick enough to do) on the B8/B8.5, but it's not required on the A6/A7/Q5 due to the extra space.

We do offer catted downpipes, but we also have high-flow catted test pipes (after almost a year of testing/development) as well for people who can't sacrifice passing emissions but don't want to have to swap test pipes every year. Our catted downpipes are simply for sound and smell, as well as being swappable (v-band) like all of our downpipe rear sections so cats can be run on the street and straight or res can be thrown in for the track, etc.

If ya値l are still on here, I知 looking for options. My SQ just got some heat-shielded,CAP test pipes. It used to sound glorious with factory cats, going into a Magnaflow 11385 at the center and then exiting through two Vibrant Ultra-quiet 1141 mufflers. After I melted the cats, I installed test pipes. Now it sounds like crap. Is there something I can add? Maybe a couple of bullet resonators in the down pipe section to eliminate the new-found rasp? Im not in a state with emissions checks and I知 not really wanting to redo the entire system from test pipes back either, but I知 open to suggestions. If I could make it sound like this (before cat-less), I壇 be more than happy! https://youtube.com/shorts/89z-KwaNW...1O6E0mLXc46p7x

GAS catted test pipes have been going strong for 3 years now, still no failures.

Alternatively if you want to keep your catless test pipes, the GAS resonated downpipes to stock catback is a great combo even when catless.
